Why Leah Williamson Remains The Heart Of The Lionesses
Few footballers have come to symbolise a generation quite like Leah Williamson.
As captain of the Lionesses, Williamson became the face of England's historic UEFA Women's Euro 2022 triumph, leading her country to its first major football trophy since the men's World Cup victory of 1966.
For many supporters, she represents far more than a footballer.
She is a leader, an advocate for women's sport and one of the most recognisable figures in modern British football.
Born in Milton Keynes in 1997, Williamson joined Arsenal's academy at the age of nine and progressed through the ranks before making her senior debut in 2014.
Her versatility quickly became apparent.
Capable of playing in defence or midfield, Williamson developed into one of the most technically gifted players in the women's game and eventually became Arsenal captain.
Her rise with England followed a similar trajectory.
After representing her country at youth level, Williamson made her senior debut in 2018 and rapidly established herself as a key figure in the squad.
Everything changed in the summer of 2022.
Playing on home soil, England entered UEFA Women's Euro 2022 under significant pressure. Expectations were high, but few could have predicted the scale of what followed.
The Lionesses won all six matches on their way to the final, scoring 22 goals and conceding just two.
In front of a record crowd of 87,192 supporters at Wembley Stadium, England defeated Germany 2-1 after extra time to lift the trophy.
As captain, Williamson became the first England football captain to lift a major international trophy since Bobby Moore in 1966.
Reflecting on the achievement, she said:
"The legacy of this tournament is change."
Those words would prove prophetic.
The final attracted a television audience of more than 17 million viewers in the UK, making it one of the most watched sporting events of the year.
Grassroots participation surged, attendances in the Women's Super League increased dramatically and the profile of women's football reached unprecedented levels.
Williamson was central to that success.
She was named in UEFA's Team of the Tournament and played every minute of England's victorious campaign.
Her composure, leadership and ability to play out from the back became hallmarks of Sarina Wiegman's side.
Former England manager Hope Powell described Williamson as:
"An outstanding leader."
Meanwhile, Wiegman has repeatedly praised her intelligence, professionalism and influence within the squad.
In 2023, Williamson suffered one of the biggest setbacks of her career when she ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Arsenal.
The injury ruled her out of the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where England eventually reached the final before losing to Spain.
Many players would have struggled to recover from such a devastating blow.
Instead, Williamson returned with the same determination that had defined her career.
Throughout her rehabilitation, she remained a visible figure within the game and continued to advocate for women's football.
She has often spoken about the importance of inspiring future generations.
One of her most quoted comments remains:
"If you can see it, you can be it."
That message resonates with countless young supporters who now grow up seeing women's football regularly featured on television, in newspapers and across social media.
Today, Williamson has more than 50 England caps, multiple domestic trophies and a European Championship winners' medal.
Yet statistics only tell part of the story.
Her true legacy may be her role in helping transform the perception of women's football in England.
The Lionesses' success inspired a generation.
Leah Williamson stood at the centre of it.
As England continue their journey towards future tournaments, her place in football history is already secure.
