Home and Away: Lacey Confronts David as His Return to Work Raises Alarm

Lacey refuses to ignore her concerns about David when she discovers her father has returned to police work, setting the pair on course for an emotional confrontation. David is determined to prove he is ready to resume his duties, but his daughters are far less convinced that going back to the station is the right move.

Jo reveals that David has returned to work, leaving Lacey immediately concerned about how he will cope. Leah, Justin and Alf encourage the sisters to give their father some space, but Lacey finds it difficult to stand back when she believes David may be pushing himself too hard.

Her fears are given further weight by what happens at the police station. Cash welcomes David back and is pleased to see his boss returning, but it soon becomes clear that David is uncomfortable sitting behind his desk.

Cash suggests getting away from the paperwork for a while, but David refuses and insists on continuing. His determination is tested when Ritchie’s file appears among the work in front of him and memories of the shooting come flooding back.

David struggles with the reminder and turns his attention elsewhere, eventually dealing with newly released prisoner Zane Talbot. Zane has served ten years behind bars and is now on parole, giving David something immediate to concentrate on as he tries to regain control of his working day.

Lacey, however, has already decided that somebody needs to watch out for her father. She and Jo ask Cash to keep an eye on David, placing him in the difficult position of monitoring his own boss while trying not to undermine David’s return.

Despite Jo advising her against going to the station herself, Lacey refuses to leave the situation alone. She arrives wanting to see how David is coping and soon reveals that she and Jo asked Cash to watch him.

David is furious when he discovers what his daughters have done. He makes it clear that he does not appreciate their interference, particularly when it involves somebody he works with and supervises.

Cash also finds himself on the receiving end of David’s anger, with David warning him to stay in his lane or risk finding himself on night duty for the next six months. Yet Cash privately takes some reassurance from the outburst, recognising a glimpse of the David he knew before the shooting.

For Lacey, however, the confrontation is not about controlling her father. She has already seen how much he has been through and believes looking out for him is simply what their family does.

That becomes clear when the argument continues at home. Lacey accepts that David does not want her interfering in his work, but reminds him that their mother taught her that family always looks out for one another.

The reference to their mum gives the confrontation a much deeper emotional significance. Lacey is not simply questioning David’s professional judgement, but trying to protect her remaining parent while dealing with everything their family has already endured.

David clearly wants to reclaim his independence and prove he can handle being back at the station. Lacey equally clearly believes that being cleared to return does not mean he should have to cope with the aftermath of the shooting alone.

With Jo sharing her concerns and Cash now watching David more closely, Lacey is not the only person wondering whether the return has come too soon. David may resent the interference, but his reaction to Ritchie’s file suggests his family’s fears cannot simply be dismissed.
