Home and Away: Beau Wants Harper to Leave Summer Bay With Him

Beau puts further pressure on Harper when he suggests they leave Summer Bay together following his attack on her. Harper is still shaken after Beau hit her across the face, but instead of giving her the space to process what happened, he begins pushing for them to make a major decision about their future.

Beau presents leaving the Bay as an opportunity for the couple to work through their problems together. Harper, however, hesitates, with his proposal coming after she has already made the significant decision to leave Archie in Tane’s care for another day.

Beau has attempted to apologise for hitting Harper and initially puts his behaviour down to jealousy. He later talks about the violence he experienced during his childhood, but Harper refuses to accept his past as justification for what he has done.

Harper makes clear that a difficult upbringing does not excuse Beau becoming violent towards her. Despite this, Beau tells her that he cannot change without her in his life, placing the responsibility for his future behaviour uncomfortably close to Harper.

It leaves her dealing with far more than an apology. Beau is asking Harper to remain committed to their relationship while suggesting that his ability to improve depends upon her continuing to be there for him.

Harper’s concern for Archie is also becoming increasingly important. When she goes to Tane to collect her son, she changes her mind and asks him to keep Archie for another day instead.

Tane does not initially know that Beau has hit Harper and assumes she wants additional time alone with him. Harper therefore leaves Archie somewhere she trusts while returning to a situation that has already left her hurt and frightened.

Beau then raises the prospect of leaving Summer Bay altogether. He suggests the pair go away together so they can work on their problems, but Harper does not immediately agree.

Her hesitation is significant because leaving would take her away from the people around her in the Bay at a moment when she is already relying on Tane to care for Archie. It would also mean making an enormous commitment to Beau immediately after he has become physically violent towards her.

The situation becomes even more tense when Tane later arrives with Archie and confronts Beau. Harper does not want her son caught in the middle of what is happening and makes Tane leave.

Harper is therefore being forced to manage several pressures simultaneously. She is dealing with the aftermath of the assault, Beau’s attempts to explain himself, his insistence that he needs her in order to change, concern for Archie and now the suggestion that she should leave Summer Bay with him.

There is no indication that Harper has agreed to Beau’s proposal. Instead, she becomes increasingly alert to his tactics and remains uncertain about what he is asking her to do.

That distinction could prove crucial. Beau may be presenting leaving Summer Bay as a fresh start for their relationship, but Harper has already challenged his excuses and shown that she will not simply accept responsibility for his violence.

For Harper, the decision is about considerably more than whether she wants to remain with Beau. Archie’s wellbeing is also involved, and her instinct to leave him with Tane shows that protecting her son is already influencing the choices she makes.

Beau wants Harper to leave the Bay with him, but after everything that has happened, her hesitation speaks volumes. Rather than immediately following his plan, Harper appears to be questioning what Beau is asking of her and what leaving could really mean for herself and Archie.
