Emmerdale Charity’s Self-Defence Plan Hit by Major Problem

Charity Dingle may have found a possible way to avoid the worst consequences of her confession in Emmerdale, but the plan comes with a serious weakness that could leave her story exposed.

After taking responsibility for Dr Todd’s death to protect Sarah, Charity is facing the reality that admitting to the killing could cost her freedom. Serena now becomes an important ally as the pair consider whether Charity could argue that she acted in self-defence.

There is plenty of genuine history behind such an argument. Todd sexually assaulted Charity and later blackmailed her over the secret surrounding baby Leyla, while Sarah had also witnessed some of Todd’s treatment of her gran.

On the surface, that could provide Charity with a believable reason for fearing Todd. However, the very history that might help explain why Charity would defend herself is also something DS Ramsden already knows about.

Ramsden is aware of Charity’s previous allegations against Todd and continues to scrutinise what she says about the death. That makes it much harder for Charity to simply shape events around a self-defence claim without risking questions about exactly how the confrontation unfolded.

The problem for Charity is that she is attempting to build a defence around an incident she did not actually cause. Sarah was responsible for Todd’s fatal fall, meaning Charity has to create an account convincing enough to protect her granddaughter while avoiding details that could eventually be disproved.

Serena can help Charity think through her options, but neither woman can control what the police may uncover. Ramsden’s determination to dig deeper means Charity could soon be forced to explain details she was never present to witness.

Sarah’s own distress adds another unpredictable element. While Charity concentrates on keeping her story intact, Sarah is struggling with the knowledge that her gran could face prison because she has chosen to protect her.

A self-defence argument might appear to offer Charity a route out of the nightmare, but it could just as easily invite even closer examination of Todd’s final moments. If Ramsden begins comparing Charity’s version with the evidence, one wrong detail could be enough to turn the investigation in an entirely different direction.
