Virgin Atlantic opens direct Phuket flights for winter escapes to Thailand

British holidaymakers can now fly directly from London Heathrow to Phuket with Virgin Atlantic, following the launch of a new winter service to Thailand's largest island.

The inaugural flight departed on 18 October and arrived the following morning, introducing a seasonal connection designed for travellers heading to Thailand's beaches, resorts and neighbouring destinations.

When do the Phuket flights operate?

Virgin Atlantic operates three services each week, departing Heathrow on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Return flights leave Phuket on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The route is scheduled to continue until March 2027, using Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Passengers can choose between economy, premium economy and Upper Class accommodation.

The direct journey takes approximately 11 to 12 hours, removing the need to change aircraft in Bangkok or another international hub.

Thailand's tourism authority welcomed the first arriving passengers at Phuket International Airport on 19 October, marking the launch with an official ceremony.

Phuket offers a combination of beaches, restaurants, nightlife and opportunities to explore the surrounding coastline.

Patong attracts visitors looking for a lively resort atmosphere, while Kata and Karon offer alternatives for travellers wanting to combine beach time with local restaurants and attractions.

Away from the resorts, Phuket Old Town is known for its colourful historic buildings, markets and independent cafés. Visitors can also explore nearby islands or use Phuket as a starting point for holidays in Krabi and other parts of southern Thailand.

The British winter coincides with one of the most popular periods for visiting Phuket, when the west coast generally experiences more favourable beach conditions.

More convenient holidays to Thailand

The new connection makes Phuket easier to reach for travellers who want to begin their holiday in southern Thailand rather than travel onwards from Bangkok.

It also adds capacity during a popular winter holiday period, when British travellers often look to Southeast Asia for warmer weather and longer breaks.

Virgin Atlantic's service is seasonal, so passengers planning travel beyond March should check whether direct flights are available for their preferred dates.
