Sony Music targets 260,000 AI deepfake tracks as music industry fights back

Sony Music has asked streaming platforms to remove more than 260,000 AI-generated tracks.

The recordings reportedly imitate artists including Harry Styles, Adele, Britney Spears, Queen and Michael Jackson. Sony says the unauthorised use of performers’ voices and likenesses can mislead listeners and undermine their rights.

The total is almost double the 135,000 tracks Sony sought to remove by the end of March, underscoring the rapid growth of AI-generated music.

The issue extends beyond impersonation. AI tracks are also being uploaded in bulk and played through automated systems to generate royalties, potentially diverting revenue from legitimate artists. Deezer has reported significant fraudulent streaming activity involving AI music.

Sony’s campaign is increasing pressure on streaming platforms to detect unauthorised recordings, label AI-generated content and prevent the commercial misuse of performers’ identities.

The dispute reflects a wider entertainment-industry debate over consent, copyright and how AI can be used without harming human creators.
