Emmerdale’s Ruby has no idea what Sadie has put in motion
Ruby tries to avoid alcohol in Emmerdale, but Sadie secretly interferes with her drinks and creates a misleading encounter with Ross.
Coming up on Emmerdale, Ruby makes a decision that should give her more control over an evening out. Sadie’s response is to take that control away while continuing to behave like a supportive friend.
Ruby wants to avoid drinking, frustrating Sadie’s attempts to portray her as someone whose behaviour Caleb should worry about. Rather than accept that her plan is failing, Sadie secretly switches their drinks.
The interference builds on the position Sadie has already established between husband and wife. She encourages Caleb to worry about Ruby’s drinking, then presents his concern to Ruby as evidence that he is trying to control her.
That leaves Ruby believing Sadie understands her frustration. It also gives Sadie a way to influence how Caleb interprets what he sees.
During the evening, Vanessa talks about her lack of romance, prompting Sadie to demonstrate her flirting techniques on Ross. She persuades him to dance before swapping Ruby into her place.
Caleb arrives as Ruby collapses against Ross, witnessing a scene Sadie has helped create. He sees his wife apparently drunk and physically close to another man, without knowing why she is in that condition.
Ruby is horrified when she realises she has consumed alcohol. Sadie pretends to help, while preparing to interfere further and later telling Caleb that Ruby left with Ross.
The deception depends on Ruby and Caleb each trusting the wrong account. Ruby believes she is spending time with a friend, while Caleb treats what he witnesses as proof of his suspicions.
When Ruby eventually learns what Sadie has suggested, the friendship becomes much harder to accept. Her anger is directed at someone who has used private trust to make her look responsible for an evening she did not control.
