Coronation Street’s Summer puts her trust in the wrong man
Summer believes Ross is protecting Marco in Coronation Street, unaware that the prison officer is responsible for his distress.
Coming up on Coronation Street, Summer believes she has found someone who can help Marco survive prison. What she does not realise is that the officer offering reassurance is responsible for some of the distress she is trying to ease.
Marco’s girlfriend has continued standing by him and hopes his appeal will bring him home. However, her visits offer only a limited view of his life inside, leaving her dependent on what he and the people around him are willing to say.
Gary, who shares Marco’s cell, begins noticing signs that something is wrong. A gash on Marco’s arm raises his suspicions, although the younger prisoner tries to dismiss the injury.
The concern grows when Summer and Maria arrive for a visit and are told Marco will not leave his cell. Gary tells Maria that he fears Marco is being bullied, but she begs her husband not to become involved and risk trouble himself.
Outside prison, Ross appears far less threatening than the man Marco knows behind the cell door. His connection to Tyrone gives him a place in Weatherfield life, allowing Summer to approach him in the Rovers as someone who might help.
Ross promises to keep an eye on Marco, leaving her grateful. During another visit, Summer even tells her boyfriend how fortunate he is to have the officer looking out for him.
Marco hides his reaction, but Ross later destroys a card Summer has sent. When Gary discovers his cellmate’s distress and confronts the officer, Ross dismisses him and makes clear that he controls what happens inside.
Summer’s confidence in Ross leaves Marco facing an especially cruel situation. The person she believes is protecting him is someone he cannot easily escape.
