Who Is the Father of Penny’s Baby in EastEnders? The Vinny and Harry Dates Explained

Penny Branning has given birth to her baby boy in EastEnders, but there is still one very important question hanging over the new arrival. Is Vinny Panesar really the father, or could it actually be Harry Mitchell?

We’ve done our best to work out the dates, but we’ll admit EastEnders has got us confused too. We might be wrong, so if you’ve spotted something we’ve missed, feel free to correct us!

Thankfully, there are some dates we do know. With Penny giving birth on 16 September 2026, we can finally put them together and see what they actually tell us.

When did Penny sleep with Harry?

Penny revealed on 31 March 2026 that she had slept with Harry on the same day he entered detox. That appears to place their encounter on 15 December 2025.

Viewers did not see them sleep together at the time, but EastEnders later revealed that it had happened. Penny also said that she and Harry had used protection.

Just over two weeks later, however, Vinny entered the picture.

When did Penny sleep with Vinny?

Penny and Vinny got together on New Year’s Eve, 31 December 2025. Penny later revealed that they had not used protection.

When Penny discovered she was pregnant on 23 February 2026, she therefore believed Vinny was the father. That means there were only 16 days between her encounters with the two possible fathers.

The key dates are:

15 December 2025: Penny sleeps with Harry.

31 December 2025: Penny sleeps with Vinny.

23 February 2026: Penny discovers she is pregnant.

30 March 2026: Penny’s first scan raises questions about the dates.

16 September 2026: Penny gives birth.

17 September 2026: Penny had been booked for a planned caesarean.

Why did Penny start questioning who the father was?

Everything changed at Penny’s first scan on 30 March.

Penny told the sonographer that she believed she was 14 weeks pregnant, but the scan indicated that her pregnancy was further along than that. Suddenly, the possible conception period moved backwards and her encounter with Harry became important.

The following day, Penny admitted to Lauren and Oscar that she had slept with Harry on the day he entered detox. Harry also told Nicola that he and Penny had slept together once.

Nicola began putting the pieces together, while Penny could no longer be certain that Vinny was the baby’s father.

Didn’t Penny have a DNA test?

This is where the storyline becomes even more complicated. Nicola worked out that Harry could be the father and demanded that Penny take a DNA test, threatening to expose her secret if she refused.

But Penny never obtained a genuine result. With Oscar’s help, she instead produced a fake DNA result naming Vinny as the father in an attempt to convince Nicola to back off.

That means the supposed proof that Vinny was the father didn’t actually prove anything.

Vinny continued believing the baby was his, while Penny still had no definitive answer.

So what do the dates actually tell us?

Pregnancy is usually described as lasting around 40 weeks, but those 40 weeks are counted from the first day of the last menstrual period rather than from conception. Conception typically happens around two weeks later, giving a rough calculation of around 38 weeks, or 266 days, from conception to an estimated due date.

If Penny conceived around the time she slept with Harry on 15 December 2025, that calculation gives an estimated due date of around 7 September 2026.

If Penny conceived around the time she slept with Vinny on 31 December 2025, the same calculation gives an estimated due date of around 23 September 2026.

Penny was booked to have her planned caesarean on 17 September, before going into labour naturally and giving birth one day earlier. Her planned delivery date therefore falls between our two rough calculations.

The biggest clue remains that March scan. Penny thought she was 14 weeks pregnant, but the scan suggested she was further along. That was enough to reopen the possibility that Harry could be the father.

In the 16 September episode, Penny prepared to tell Vinny the truth, only for her waters to break before she could. Vinny eventually reached the hospital in time and Penny successfully gave birth to her son.

Afterwards, Penny decided to continue keeping the uncertainty surrounding the baby’s paternity from Vinny. Her secret is becoming harder to contain, however, after Priya overheard Penny talking to Lauren and discovered what she had been hiding.

Still confused? We are too. After the dates, the scan and a fake DNA result, EastEnders has still left the paternity question unanswered. Harry or Vinny? For now, both remain possible, but with Priya now in on Penny’s secret, keeping it from Vinny could be about to get much harder.
