Who Is Dulcie Collins in Deadloch and Who Plays Her

Dulcie Collins is the meticulous detective at the centre of Australian crime comedy Deadloch, played by Kate Box.

Her careful manner contrasts with the chaotic approach of fellow investigator Eddie Redcliffe, played by Madeleine Sami, making their uneasy partnership one of the programme's defining features.

Dulcie is also a lesbian character whose marriage and personal history are woven into the story. SoaplandTV has also explored why Deadloch has become an acclaimed LGBTQ+ drama.

Who Is Dulcie Collins?

When Deadloch begins, Dulcie is a senior police officer in a small Tasmanian town, having stepped away from more demanding detective work.

A murder on the beach forces her back into a major investigation just as Eddie arrives from Darwin. Dulcie's insistence on procedure clashes with Eddie's instincts, but the detectives gradually discover that they need each other.

Her marriage to Cath, played by Alicia Gardiner, adds another layer to her life. Their relationship faces strains as Dulcie's work pulls her towards dangers and professional habits she had hoped to leave behind.

It gives viewers a queer relationship shaped by familiar pressures of trust, work and home life.

Who Plays Dulcie Collins?

Australian actress Kate Box portrays Dulcie, bringing restraint and dry humour to a role that could have been overshadowed by louder characters.

Her performance won recognition at the AACTA Awards, where the series received multiple honours following its first season. SoaplandTV later covered the Logie nominations for Kate Box and Madeleine Sami and Deadloch's results at the 2026 Logies.

Box returned alongside Madeleine Sami for a second series, moving the investigation from Tasmania to Australia's tropical Northern Territory.

The change in setting brings another complicated case while preserving the contrasting personalities that gave the first season its distinctive appeal.

Why Dulcie's Story Matters

Dulcie is a capable professional whose sexuality is part of her life without becoming her only defining characteristic.

Her relationship with Cath and her partnership with Eddie explore different kinds of loyalty, while the show's dark humour challenges conventions of television crime dramas.
