What Is the Tillyverse? Why Tilly Norwood Has No Body, Childhood or Lived Experience

Tilly Norwood may look recognisably human, but the fictional world being built around her begins from a very different idea. She has no physical body, no childhood and no personal history in the way a traditional character would, yet her creators are now exploring what it means for her to exist, perform and develop an identity of her own.

Speaking exclusively to SoapLandTV, Eline van der Velden, Founder & CEO of Particle 6, has revealed more about the Tillyverse, the digital world surrounding Tilly, and how those ideas will be explored in the character’s feature film, Misaligned. She has also discussed plans for an interactive Tilly, confirmed that other characters are in development and revealed that Particle 6 has further film and television work underway for partners.

Eline describes the Tillyverse as something much broader than the content audiences have already seen from Tilly, calling it a surreal digital world that exists in the cloud. It will provide the setting for Misaligned, which has already been announced as Tilly’s feature debut.

“We've already announced her feature debut, Misaligned - a comedy-drama set in the Tillyverse, this surreal digital world up in the cloud.”

That setting gives Particle 6 an unusual starting point for storytelling. Traditional fictional characters generally arrive with some form of past, whether that means relationships, childhood memories, experiences or events that have shaped who they are by the time audiences meet them.

Tilly is being developed from a very different position, and Misaligned will not try to hide that difference. Instead, the fact that she has never physically lived appears set to become one of the central ideas behind the story.

“Tilly has no body, no childhood, no lived experience of her own, but access to everyone else's, and a rogue bot tempts her to drop her guardrails.”

It raises an intriguing question around Tilly as a character. If she has never personally experienced the things that normally shape a human identity, what does it mean for her to have a personality, humour, opinions or a public voice?

Rather than avoiding that contradiction, Misaligned is set to use it. Eline says the comedy drama will explore identity and performance while also drawing on some of the real concerns that have surrounded AI since the technology began moving more visibly into entertainment.

“It's funny and chaotic, very her, but underneath it there's something real about identity and performance and our fears around this technology. Art will most definitely be imitating life on that one.”

The connection between Tilly’s fictional story and the debate surrounding her in the real world is difficult to miss. Since she became widely known, much of the conversation around Tilly has focused on what an AI-created character represents, whether audiences will accept characters like her and what their arrival could ultimately mean for actors and other creative workers.

Misaligned appears willing to bring some of those same questions into Tilly’s own world. The story places identity, control and her own technological limitations directly into the narrative rather than pretending she exists in exactly the same way as a traditional human character.

The production itself will also bring together people from established filmmaking backgrounds and specialists working with AI. Eline says writers, directors and editors are part of the process rather than the film being handed over entirely to generative systems.

“We've got traditional directors, writers and editors working right alongside our AI specialists on it.”

That approach follows the philosophy Eline outlined in part one of our interview, where she argued that the technology should remain under human creative direction. Misaligned will provide a larger test of that approach as Particle 6 moves from shorter Tilly content into longer-form storytelling.

It also begins to answer another question that has followed Tilly since her emergence: what is she ultimately supposed to become?

Eline does not see the project ending with a single film, although she is careful not to present early ideas as confirmed productions. The ambition extends to longer storytelling, partnerships and giving Tilly a larger presence of her own.

“Beyond that, branded partnerships, longer-form storytelling, more of her own voice in the world - that's absolutely the ambition.”

For Eline, the current period should therefore be viewed as an introduction to Tilly rather than the finished version of the project. Her early interviews and appearances have established the character, but Particle 6 now wants to find out what happens when Tilly is given more developed stories and opportunities to interact with audiences.

“This interview cycle is really just the introduction chapter. Where she goes next depends on finding partners who want to take this seriously as a creative project, not treat her as a gimmick.”

That distinction is important to Eline because she does not want Tilly to exist only as a demonstration of what AI technology can generate. The longer-term aim is for audiences to engage with the character and the storytelling around her, rather than viewing every appearance purely through the question of how she was created.

Whether audiences will eventually follow AI-created personalities in the same way they already engage with fictional, animated or virtual characters remains uncertain. Eline believes the deciding factor will ultimately be much more traditional than the technology behind them.

“Whether that becomes properly mainstream or stays a fascinating niche, I don't think comes down to the technology at all. It comes down to whether the storytelling is good. It always does.”

Tilly could also become more directly accessible to audiences. Particle 6 is developing an interactive version of the character, although Eline is deliberately keeping the details limited until there is more that can be formally revealed.

“Beyond that, we're also launching an interactive Tilly soon, but I can't share too much detail just yet.”

Exactly what interactive Tilly will involve therefore remains under wraps. Eline’s comments confirm that the project is being developed, but Particle 6 has not yet revealed how audiences will interact with her, what form the experience will take or when further details will be announced.

Tilly may not remain the only character being developed in this way either. Eline confirms that Particle 6 is already working on others, although the company’s immediate attention remains firmly on Tilly.

“There are other characters in development too, but Tilly is the focus right now.”

That could eventually expand the fictional world surrounding her, but there are currently no confirmed details about who those characters are or how they might connect to Tilly. There has also been no confirmation that they will appear in Misaligned, so anything beyond Eline’s comments at this stage would be speculation.

Particle 6 is working beyond its own characters too. Eline revealed that the company has film and television projects underway for outside partners, although she is unable to identify those productions yet.

“We also have exciting film and TV projects underway for various partners, but we are not allowed to discuss them just yet either.”

Rather than using those undisclosed projects to create expectations before they are ready, Eline says she would prefer to wait until there is something definite to announce. It is a cautious approach that keeps a clear distinction between the company’s ambitions and projects that are actually locked.

“Anything more specific than that, I'd rather let land properly when it's actually locked, rather than tease it before it's real.”

For now, Misaligned offers the clearest indication of where Tilly Norwood is heading. It takes one of the strangest things about the character, the fact that she can look and communicate like a person despite having no physical life or personal past, and turns that contradiction into part of the story itself.

The Tillyverse also gives Particle 6 somewhere to explore questions that already follow Tilly in the real world. Identity, performance, experience, control and the boundaries placed around an AI character can become part of the entertainment rather than remaining conversations that only happen outside it.

There are clearly bigger ambitions beyond Tilly’s first film, from interactive experiences and additional characters to other film and television work, but Eline remains careful about separating confirmed developments from future possibilities. For now, the next chapter is about finding out whether audiences connect not simply with the technology behind Tilly, but with Tilly herself and the stories built around her.
