Whalefall Traps Austin Abrams Inside a Whale in Terrifying New Survival Thriller
Whalefall stars Austin Abrams as a diver swallowed by a sperm whale with just one hour of oxygen left. Here is everything we know about the new survival thriller.
A new survival thriller is heading to cinemas this October, and the premise alone makes Whalefall one of the strangest and most intriguing film releases of the autumn.
Austin Abrams stars as Jay Gardiner, a young man who goes diving off the coast of California following the death of his father. His mission quickly becomes something far more extreme when he is swallowed by a massive sperm whale and left trapped inside with only one hour of oxygen remaining.
The film is based on Daniel Kraus’s acclaimed novel of the same name and is directed by Brian Duffield, who also co wrote the screenplay with Kraus. Duffield previously worked on projects including No One Will Save You, and Whalefall sees him taking on a story that combines survival thriller tension with a much more emotional father and son story.

Josh Brolin plays Jay’s father, while the supporting cast includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd. The story centres on Jay trying to remember the lessons his father taught him as he searches for a way to survive inside the whale.
That unusual setting is likely to be one of the film’s biggest talking points. Duffield has revealed that the cast and crew spent a summer filming inside a constructed whale set on a sound stage in Studio City, California, allowing the production to create the claustrophobic environment required for the story.
The film will open exclusively in cinemas on 16 October 2026. A streaming release has not yet been announced.
