A science-fiction story about a boy who rebuilds his dead mother from the digital traces she left behind is now moving toward a full-length movie after winning the Future Vision XPRIZE.

The Gifted was named the competition’s grand prize winner on September 26, securing a $2.5 million equity investment toward production of the feature. The project also receives $100,000 for screenplay development, with Range Media Partners and Google supporting its move from competition entry to full-length film.

At the center of the story is an 11-year-old boy dealing with the death of his mother. He uses the messages, voice recordings, diary entries and other pieces of her digital life to reconstruct her as an artificial intelligence.

What begins as something deeply personal gradually becomes much bigger. The AI starts helping people beyond the family, raising questions about what happens when a digital recreation built around kindness becomes powerful enough to attract attention and fear.

That gives The Gifted a different starting point from many familiar stories about artificial intelligence. Instead of beginning with an AI designed to control, attack or replace people, the story asks what might happen if the technology became influential because people trusted it.

The Future Vision XPRIZE was created to find science-fiction stories imagining optimistic, technology-enabled futures rather than relying entirely on dystopian scenarios. More than 2,500 trailers and treatments were submitted before five finalists reached the last stage of the competition.

Winning does not mean The Gifted is automatically an entirely AI-generated movie. The competition allowed traditional filmmaking, animation and AI-assisted methods, with the emphasis placed on the story and the future it imagined rather than requiring one particular production technique.

The financial backing is significant because it gives the project a genuine route toward becoming a feature rather than remaining a short concept created for a competition. Range Media Partners and Google are involved through 100 ZEROS, an initiative working with entertainment creators on stories involving technology and science.

Republic Film is also expected to launch a public investment campaign connected with the feature. That would give supporters another route to participate financially as the project develops, although production details are still taking shape.

Casting, filming dates and a release plan have not yet been announced as the main focus remains development of the feature. The immediate story is that a concept selected from thousands of entries now has millions of dollars behind its attempt to become a full-length movie.

The Gifted will ultimately have to prove that its emotional idea can work across an entire film rather than just an attention-grabbing premise. The combination of grief, digital identity and an AI version of someone who has died gives it plenty to explore if the project reaches the screen.
