Stephen Fry, Dannii Minogue and Kelly Holmes Unite for Major LGBTQ+ Youth Campaign

Thirty well known LGBTQ+ figures and allies from television, music, sport and entertainment have joined forces for a major campaign supporting LGBTQ+ young people across the UK.

Sir Stephen Fry, Dannii Minogue, Dame Kelly Holmes, Tom Allen, Adele Roberts, Danny Beard, Courtney Act and Denise Welch are among those appearing in a new film for The Proud Trust’s #DeserveBetter campaign. The message is simple but important, with the campaign calling for LGBTQ+ young people to feel safe, accepted, heard and able to thrive.

30 famous faces support #DeserveBetter

The campaign brings together a wide range of public figures from across British culture and sport.

Alongside Stephen, Dannii and Kelly, the film includes Heartstopper actor Kizzy Edgell, former Coronation Street stars Charlie Condou and Alexandra Mardell, It’s A Sin actor Nathaniel J Hall, comedian James Barr, actor Cyril Nri and author Matt Cain MBE.

Sport is strongly represented too, with former Lioness Anita Asante, Lianne Sanderson, rugby stars Heather Fisher and Meg Jones MBE, badminton player Kirsty Gilmour, wheelchair tennis player Lucy Shuker BEM and world champion curler Bruce Mouat all taking part.

The line up also includes West End performer Rob Madge, Smoggie Queens stars Elijah Young and Peter McPherson, actors Shakeel Kimotho and Gabriel Clark and performers Catrin Feelings and Elle Vosque.

Support that lasts beyond Pride season

One of the most positive elements of the campaign is its focus on year round support rather than limiting visibility to Pride season.

The Proud Trust has linked #DeserveBetter to its Pride 365 fundraiser, which aims to raise £36,500. That total represents £100 for every day of the year and is designed to support the charity’s ongoing work with LGBTQ+ young people through youth groups, one to one support, mentoring, family services, education and training.

The charity has worked with LGBTQ+ young people, families, schools and communities for more than 30 years, and the campaign is clearly rooted in that wider everyday work.

Why this matters

The most encouraging part of #DeserveBetter is that it is not just a celebrity backed awareness moment. It points people directly towards a charity already doing practical work every day to support LGBTQ+ young people across the UK.

Bringing together 30 LGBTQ+ figures and allies also sends a strong message to younger members of the community. There are successful LGBTQ+ people across television, music, theatre and sport, and there are allies willing to stand beside them.
