EastEnders Prepares for Major Carter Family Exits as Linda and Johnny Leave Walford

EastEnders is preparing for a significant farewell to the Carter family, with Linda and Johnny both set to leave Albert Square in 2027. Their departures come as the BBC soap brings other members of the family back into the story, creating the possibility of a particularly emotional conclusion to more than a decade of Carter history.

Kellie Bright's decision to leave after 13 years was announced in August, while Charlie Suff's departure as Johnny has also been confirmed. The news means two important members of the family are heading towards their final scenes, although the details of their exit storylines remain closely guarded.

Lee and Nancy Return to the Family

The departures are taking place against the backdrop of Lee and Nancy's return to Walford, bringing several of Linda's children back into the same storyline.

Danny Hatchard and Maddy Hill reprise their roles as the Carter siblings, whose complicated family relationships have been central to some of the programme's most memorable moments. Their return is particularly important given Linda's history with her children and the difficult years that followed Mick's disappearance.

Lee has previously struggled with his mental health and the pressures of family life, while Nancy's relationship with her parents has often been shaped by her determination to make her own decisions. Bringing them back gives the writers an opportunity to revisit those relationships before Linda's departure.

Johnny's Departure Adds Another Complication

Johnny's exit is especially significant because his return in 2024 placed him at the centre of Linda's personal difficulties. He has spent much of his recent time in Walford trying to support his mother while dealing with his own relationships and future.

His romance with Callum also gives the character an important connection beyond the Carter family. Their relationship has already faced complications, including Callum's history with Ben, making Johnny's eventual departure an important development for the couple.

With both Johnny and Linda leaving, the soap has several relationships to resolve. Their bond as mother and son has been tested repeatedly, but Johnny has remained one of the people most closely involved in Linda's life.

Could Linda Finally Find Happiness?

Linda has endured an extraordinary amount since arriving in Walford in 2013. Her marriage to Mick, her struggles with alcoholism and her involvement in Keanu's death have all left lasting consequences, while her relationship with Max has created further complications.

The return of her children raises the possibility of a farewell that focuses on family rather than another period of isolation. With Lee and Nancy back on the Square, Linda has an opportunity to confront aspects of her past while considering what she wants from the future.

For long-standing viewers, the strongest ending may be one that recognises how much Linda has survived without simply repeating the difficulties that have dominated her recent storylines. After 13 years, the character has earned a conclusion that reflects both her resilience and her importance to the programme.

Linda and Johnny are expected to leave EastEnders in 2027. The soap continues on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
