Star Trek Favourite Leads New ITV Murder Mystery Set in Ireland
Kate Mulgrew and Colm Meaney star in The Galway Bay Murders, a new ITV crime thriller set in Ireland's dramatic Connemara landscape.
Star Trek: Voyager favourite Kate Mulgrew is taking on a very different role in The Galway Bay Murders, a new six-part crime thriller heading to ITV1 and ITVX.
The actress, also known for Orange Is the New Black, plays a New York detective who travels to Ireland hoping to escape a traumatic past. Instead of the quieter life she imagined, she becomes involved in a murder investigation that puts her and those around her in danger.
A Murder Investigation in Connemara
Mulgrew plays Nora Savage, an experienced NYPD detective who arrives in Galway on an exchange programme with the Irish police.
When the body of a young climate activist is discovered in a bog, Nora joins the investigation and soon finds herself confronting a powerful environmental businessman.
The case brings together environmental interests, local tensions and dangerous secrets, while Nora struggles with events from her own past.
Colm Meaney stars alongside Mulgrew, with John Connors, India Mullen, Cillian O'Sullivan, Jack Rowan, Clinton Liberty and Dervla Kirwan also appearing.
The drama comes from Two Cities Television, the company behind BBC police drama Blue Lights.
The Chance Meeting Behind the Series
There's an unusual story behind how The Galway Bay Murders came about. Writer Eithne Verling met Kate Mulgrew while the actress was visiting Galway, and their friendship eventually led to Verling writing the six episodes specifically for her.
Verling, who previously worked at Galway City Museum, has also drawn on her knowledge of the area and its communities. The drama explores Traveller culture alongside themes of power, manipulation and deception.
Where to Watch The Galway Bay Murders
The Galway Bay Murders begins on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player in Ireland on Sunday 8 November at 9.30pm.
ITV has acquired the series for ITV1 and ITVX, with STV and STV Player also carrying it in Scotland. A separate UK premiere date has not been announced.
