Spanish prosecutors investigate alleged homophobic comments about Héctor Bellerín
Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation reported on 6 October into alleged homophobic comments made by YouTuber Iñaki Angulo about Héctor Bellerín.
Spanish prosecutors have opened an investigation into alleged homophobic comments made about Real Betis defender Héctor Bellerín by YouTuber Iñaki Angulo, bringing renewed attention to the language used about footballers on online platforms.
The Madrid Provincial Prosecutor’s Office investigation was reported on 6 October 2026, following a complaint concerning remarks Angulo allegedly made during a YouTube livestream while discussing Bellerín. The comments reportedly referred to the footballer’s painted nails and included a homophobic slur.
According to Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, the complaint was submitted by the Association for Transparency and Democracy in Sport approximately a month earlier. Close to 100 people subsequently joined the complaint, which asks authorities to investigate whether the comments could constitute an offence against fundamental rights and public freedoms.
The proceedings are at the investigation stage and do not amount to a finding of guilt against Angulo.
The case has drawn attention to the way homophobic language can be used to ridicule men whose appearance or interests do not conform to traditional expectations of masculinity. In this instance, Bellerín’s painted nails were reportedly used as part of the remarks directed at him.
The defender’s sexuality should not be inferred from the incident. Homophobic abuse can target people regardless of their sexual orientation, and the wider concern is the use of anti-gay language as an insult.
The case also reflects a broader debate about how football culture treats self-expression. Players’ clothing, appearance and personal interests can attract intense scrutiny, while online broadcasts allow comments to reach large audiences well beyond the original discussion.
For LGBTQ+ supporters and athletes, challenging homophobia means addressing both direct abuse and the attitudes that make such language seem acceptable. The fact that a complaint has prompted a prosecutorial investigation also highlights the potential consequences of comments made in public sporting debate.
The next steps will depend on the outcome of the investigation. For now, the case has placed the use of homophobic insults in football commentary under renewed scrutiny.
