Pride is heading deep into the Australian Outback for a week of drag and queer joy
Rainbow in the Outback brings drag, music, queer art and LGBTQ+ celebrations to Broken Hill, Australia, from 21 September.
Pride is heading somewhere very different as Rainbow in the Outback takes over Broken Hill in regional New South Wales for a week of drag, music, art and LGBTQ+ celebrations.
Running from 21 to 27 September, the festival puts queer culture at the heart of one of Australia's most famous Outback cities, hundreds of miles from the huge LGBTQ+ scenes of Sydney and Melbourne.

The programme ranges from drag bingo and queer art to live music, cabaret, markets and late-night parties, with performers including Art Simone, TRO, Freddie Merkin, Cliterally and Dorian Courtisan.
It all begins with a free LGBTQ+ art exhibition celebrating identity and visibility, before the week moves through a packed programme of entertainment across Broken Hill.

Saturday brings the biggest night with Shine Bright, featuring live music, cabaret, DJs and drag performances running into the early hours.
The festival then finishes with the more relaxed and family-friendly Big Gay Wind Down Market.
What makes Rainbow in the Outback particularly interesting is its location. Broken Hill sits in far western New South Wales and is famous for its mining history, desert landscapes and distinctive Outback setting.
It is a very different backdrop from the major cities normally associated with Australia's biggest LGBTQ+ celebrations.

For people living regionally, the festival also provides a highly visible LGBTQ+ celebration much closer to home.
For everyone else, it offers perhaps one of the more unusual Pride trips on Australia's calendar: drag, queer culture and nightlife surrounded by the Australian Outback.
Rainbow in the Outback runs from 21 to 27 September. Explore the programme, performers and tickets through Rainbow in the Outback's official website.
