Pride Cheerleading Association pledges $4,500 to LGBTQ+ sports scholarships

The Pride Cheerleading Association has pledged $4,500 to support the Federation of Gay Games Scholarship Program following a fundraising effort during Gay Games XII in Valencia.

The organisation announced the contribution on 16 October, explaining that the money was raised over 28 days during the Games. More than 140 Charitable Cheerleaders took part, with donations coming from supporters both online and in person.

The funds are intended for the Federation of Gay Games’ scholarship programme, which helps people take part in the Games when financial or other barriers might otherwise prevent them from attending.

The Federation says the programme is particularly important for people whose ability to live openly and authentically remains restricted or criminalised in their home countries. Financial support can help make participation possible for athletes and other members of the LGBTQ+ community who might not otherwise be able to travel to an international event.

The Pride Cheerleading Association said its fundraising effort was inspired by the scholarship programme and the wider values of the Gay Games. Its VolunCheerleaders also wanted to continue supporting the event’s principles of participation, inclusion and personal best.

The association has completed the accounting process covering multiple currencies and payment methods and says it is now prepared to transfer the money to the scholarship programme.

The pledge demonstrates how sporting events can create opportunities for community fundraising alongside competition. For LGBTQ+ athletes, access to international events can provide a chance to compete, connect with others and take part in an environment built around inclusion.
