Coronation Street's Forgotten Sir Patrick Stewart Scene Resurfaces After Star's Death

Sir Patrick Stewart's forgotten Coronation Street appearance has resurfaced following his death aged 86, revealing how the future Star Trek and X-Men legend began his television career as a fire officer in Weatherfield nearly 60 years ago.

The black-and-white footage, originally broadcast on 25 January 1967, shows a 26-year-old Stewart attending a house fire caused by Dennis Tanner, played by Philip Lowrie, while decorating Len Fairclough's property. Although his character was never given a name, the brief appearance would later become a treasured memory for the actor, who admitted it had finally convinced his parents that he might have a future in acting.

The clip is being shared again following Stewart's death on Wednesday 28 October at his Los Angeles home, bringing renewed attention to an unexpected connection between one of Britain's longest-running soaps and one of Hollywood's most celebrated performers.

Patrick Stewart's first TV role was on Coronation Street

Stewart appeared in episode 638 of Coronation Street, entering the property alongside other firefighters after Dennis accidentally started a blaze at number 15 Mawdsley Street.

The young actor delivered a brief line about the damage before disappearing from the story, with nobody watching at the time able to predict that he would eventually become internationally famous as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films.

The footage had previously attracted attention online in 2020, when viewers discovered the surprising early appearance and began sharing the clip across social media.

The Corrie role that made his parents proud

During an appearance on BBC One's The One Show in July 2020, Stewart explained that he had recently completed his first season with the Royal Shakespeare Company when its director, Peter Hall, unexpectedly offered him a three-year contract.

Although delighted to secure the agreement, Stewart found himself without an immediate stage production, leaving him available when the opportunity to appear in Coronation Street came along.

He recalled the experience with affection, joking about the significance of appearing in the famous soap before explaining how much the television appearance had meant to his family.

"More than anything else it made my parents very happy," Stewart recalled, adding that they finally believed he might be able to build a successful acting career.

His close friend Sir Ian McKellen would later follow him onto the cobbles in 2005, playing Mel Hutchwright, a supposed novelist whose real name was Lionel Hipkiss.

Stewart subsequently enjoyed an extraordinary career spanning Shakespeare, television and Hollywood, although his brief appearance in Weatherfield remained a source of pride and amusement decades later.

The rediscovered footage now provides a poignant reminder of where his television career began, long before he became one of the most recognisable actors in the world.
