Heat 2 Director Michael Mann Injured in Accidental Shooting at Los Angeles Gun Range
Heat director Michael Mann, 83, suffers a minor leg injury in an accidental shooting at a Los Angeles gun range, with Heat 2 filming still planned for January.
Hollywood director Michael Mann has been treated in hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range, with his representative confirming that the 83-year-old filmmaker suffered only a minor injury.
The director, whose films include Heat, Collateral and The Insider, was taking part in target practice on Saturday 31 October 2026 when a firearm discharged as he was placing it into its holster. Emergency services attended the scene and transported him to hospital, where his condition was described as stable.
Mann's representative confirmed on Sunday 1 November that the injury was superficial and that he was being released following treatment.
What Happened to Michael Mann?
The accident occurred at approximately 4pm local time at a sanctioned shooting range in West Los Angeles, where Mann was practising with a handgun.
His representative confirmed: "On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann."
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 11000 block of Missouri Avenue, with officers subsequently establishing that the incident was accidental.
Law enforcement sources have identified the injury as being to Mann's left thigh, while his representative described the wound as superficial and confirmed that he had received hospital treatment.
Mann has been an experienced target shooter for several decades, with his familiarity with firearms reflected in the detailed preparation that has become a feature of his filmmaking.
His 1995 crime thriller Heat is particularly well known for its realistic depiction of gunfire, including the lengthy downtown Los Angeles shootout involving Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer and the police.
Will Michael Mann's Accident Affect Heat 2?
The incident comes as Mann prepares to direct Heat 2, his long-awaited follow-up to the 1995 thriller starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
Production is currently expected to begin in January 2027, with a source close to the filmmaker indicating that the accident will not affect the planned start of filming. The project adapts Mann's 2022 novel, written alongside Meg Gardiner, which explores events taking place both before and after the original film.
The story revisits the criminal world surrounding Neil McCauley, originally played by De Niro, and detective Vincent Hanna, portrayed by Pacino, while following Chris Shiherlis after the events of the first film.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Stephen Graham have been linked to major roles in the new production, with Mann returning to direct and oversee the adaptation.
SoapLandTV has previously followed the film's development, including reports that The Bear star Ebon Moss-Bachrach was being lined up for a key role.
Michael Mann Continues Preparing for His Next Film
Mann remains active in the film industry, having most recently directed the 2023 biographical drama Ferrari, starring Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz.
His career also includes Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, Ali and Miami Vice, with his work frequently recognised for its attention to realism and detailed preparation.
Although the shooting incident prompted concerns about his wellbeing, the latest information from his representative is reassuring, with the injury described as minor and hospital treatment completed.
With Heat 2 still expected to begin production early next year, there has been no reported change to the film's planned schedule following the accident.
