Meet Samantha and Sarah: The Very Different Women at the Heart of New WLW AI Series Samsarah

At the heart of new WLW AI series Samsarah is a relationship built around two women who, on paper at least, should probably never have crossed paths in quite this way.

Samantha and Sarah are separated by age, experience, personality and very different lives, yet creator Isabelle has always known their meeting would become the centre of the story.

Samantha is 40 and has built what appears to be a settled adult life. She is heterosexual, married, has two children and works as a real estate agent, while her personality is quieter and more reserved, with Isabelle describing her as someone who watches and listens before she speaks.

Sarah is 28 and much more outgoing. She is lesbian and has spent the past three years on her own following the tragic death of her partner, meaning the woman Samantha meets is also someone who has already experienced profound love and loss.

Those differences immediately give Samsarah more to explore than a straightforward attraction. Samantha and Sarah are not approaching their meeting from the same place, and neither carries the same expectations about what a new relationship could mean.

“I think that even though Samantha and Sarah are very different on the surface, they deeply share the same core values and are driven by the same desires.”

That common ground may ultimately prove more important than everything separating them. Isabelle believes differences can make two people complement each other, and Samantha and Sarah have been designed around that idea rather than simply being opposites for the sake of creating tension.

Their first meeting also arrives at a particularly important moment for both women. Isabelle describes them as each reaching the end of a chapter, suggesting their attraction is connected to wider changes already beginning within their individual lives.

Neither woman initially knows what the other will come to represent. What they do recognise almost immediately is that something significant has happened, creating the slow burn at the centre of Samsarah as they begin moving towards one another at different speeds.

“From the very moment they first lock eyes, they feel that something major is happening, but they have absolutely no idea where it will lead them.”

For Samantha, that connection has obvious complications. Her attraction to Sarah does not fit neatly alongside the identity and family life she has known, while Sarah's own history means opening herself to somebody again carries emotional weight of its own.

That gives the series room to explore more than the question of whether the pair will eventually become a couple. Samsarah can also look at how people respond when something unexpected forces them to reconsider what they thought they knew about themselves and the direction their lives were taking.

Their relationship was always going to be the main story. Isabelle says she was particularly interested in understanding why it had to be Samantha and Sarah who met, and why that meeting needed to happen at this exact stage of their lives.

“The true heart of the series is undeniably Samantha and Sarah.”

The wider journey has already been mapped out too. Isabelle knows where she wants to take both characters, although the creative process occasionally produces smaller changes as scenes develop and Samantha and Sarah begin to feel increasingly real to the person writing them.

One of Isabelle's favourite moments comes right at the beginning, when Sarah receives a message declaring love for her. She is deliberately keeping her other favourite scenes secret, a strong hint that some of the moments closest to her are still waiting for viewers in future episodes.

There is also no intention for Samsarah to remain permanently serious. Isabelle plans to mix the emotional and dramatic parts of Samantha and Sarah's journey with lighter scenes, fun and sensuality, while still leaving space for subjects that may make viewers think about their own relationships and experiences.
