Lisa Power MBE Named Patron of EuroGames Cardiff 2027 as Historic LGBTQ+ Games Head to Wales
LGBTQ+ campaigner and one of Stonewall’s original founders Lisa Power is patron of EuroGames Cardiff 2027 as the Games prepare to come to the UK.
Few names fit the role quite as neatly as Lisa Power MBE, an LGBTQ+ powerhouse whose decades of campaigning now connect with EuroGames Cardiff 2027.
The Iconic veteran campaigner is serving as patron of the historic event, bringing a lifetime of activism, community work and LGBTQ+ advocacy to the first EuroGames ever staged in the United Kingdom. Her involvement adds a campaigning and community voice to an event preparing to welcome athletes, allies and supporters to Cardiff from 14 to 17 July 2027.
Who is Lisa Power?
Lisa has been involved in LGBTQ+ activism for decades and was one of the original founders of Stonewall. Stonewall was established in 1989 following campaigning against Section 28, with Lisa part of the wider founding group that helped create the organisation.
Her activism began before Stonewall. In 1979, Lisa joined London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard and later developed a long career in HIV and sexual health work, including serving as Policy Director at Terrence Higgins Trust.
Lisa Power’s work in Wales
Lisa lives in Cardiff and continues to be closely involved in HIV and LGBTQ+ work in Wales. She is currently Vice Chair and a co founder of Fast Track Cymru, which brings organisations and individuals together around HIV prevention, treatment, support and reducing stigma.
Her connection to LGBTQ+ history also extends to Queer Britain. Lisa has been a trustee since February 2018, and Queer Britain describes itself as the National LGBTQ+ Museum.
The museum preserves and shares LGBTQ+ histories from across Britain, giving Lisa’s work there another link to the community history that has featured throughout her campaigning career.
Lisa Power and It’s A Sin
Lisa also played an important role behind the scenes of Russell T Davies’s acclaimed Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin. ITV Wales confirms that Russell brought Lisa onto the production to oversee its historical accuracy.
The series follows a group of friends in London as the HIV and AIDS crisis develops during the 1980s. Lisa’s experience of LGBTQ+ activism and HIV work meant she brought direct knowledge of the period being portrayed to the production.
Why Lisa Power’s EuroGames role matters
Lisa’s appointment gives EuroGames Cardiff 2027 a perspective that reaches beyond competitive sport. Her career has covered LGBTQ+ rights, HIV advocacy, community organising and the preservation of LGBTQ+ history, making her a strong fit for an event designed to bring LGBTQ+ people and allies together.
Her long connection with Cardiff adds another dimension to the role. The first UK EuroGames will not only take place in the city where Lisa now lives, but will also provide a major European platform for many of the themes of visibility, participation and community that have run throughout her work.
Alongside sporting ambassadors Jess Fishlock, Sarah Jones and Huw Ware, Lisa gives Cardiff 2027 representation from both sport and the wider LGBTQ+ movement. As preparations continue for July 2027, that combination gives the Games a strong group of voices helping introduce the event to audiences across Wales, the UK and beyond.
