John Proctor Is the Villain Reveals West End Cast After Sold Out Run

A play that challenges the way generations of students have been taught to understand one of American literature’s most famous characters is heading to the West End, with eight members of its original Royal Court company returning.

John Proctor Is the Villain, written by Kimberly Belflower, will begin performances at Wyndham’s Theatre on 2 February 2027 following its sold-out London engagement earlier this year.

The full cast was confirmed on Thursday 29 October 2026, with Dónal Finn, Sadie Soverall and Lauryn Ajufo among the returning performers. Amy Macken joins the company for the new 12-week engagement, which runs until 24 April.

Why does John Proctor Is the Villain challenge The Crucible?

Arthur Miller’s The Crucible has been studied in schools for generations, with John Proctor frequently presented as a flawed but ultimately principled figure who resists the hysteria surrounding the Salem witch trials.

Belflower’s play approaches that familiar interpretation from a different perspective, following a group of teenage girls studying Miller’s work in a contemporary American classroom.

As the students examine Proctor’s actions and relationships, events within their own community begin to influence how they understand the character and the assumptions surrounding him.

The girls increasingly question why certain men are celebrated as heroes, particularly when the experiences of women and younger people are treated as less important.

The production explores friendship, sexual misconduct, abusive relationships and the difficulties involved in challenging authority, connecting a familiar literary text with experiences that remain relevant to contemporary audiences.

Who is returning for the West End production?

Dónal Finn reprises his role as Carter Smith, while Sadie Soverall returns as Shelby Holcomb and Lauryn Ajufo as Nell Shaw.

Charlie Borg, Reece Braddock, Holly Howden Gilchrist, Miya James and Molly McFadden also return from the Royal Court production, with Amy Macken joining as Ivy Watkins.

Director Danya Taymor will once again lead the production, having previously directed the play on Broadway and during its Royal Court engagement.

Retaining much of the original London company provides continuity for a play that depends heavily on the relationships between its teenage characters and the gradual development of their different perspectives.

Why has the play attracted attention?

One of the production’s most interesting qualities is its willingness to question the accepted interpretation of a familiar literary character without simply retelling the original story.

The teenagers are not only studying The Crucible. They are also learning to examine their own experiences, friendships and relationships with adults, leading them to reconsider ideas they may previously have accepted without question.

That approach allows Belflower to explore the way literature is taught and how different generations interpret stories about morality, power and responsibility.

The production’s transfer from the Royal Court to Wyndham’s Theatre will introduce those questions to a wider West End audience.

When does John Proctor Is the Villain open?

Performances begin at Wyndham’s Theatre on 2 February 2027, with the limited run scheduled to finish on 24 April.

The play runs for approximately one hour and 45 minutes and is recommended for audiences aged 12 and over. Content guidance includes references to sexual assault, grooming and abusive relationships.
