Line of Duty Series 7 Could Return in January as BBC Drama Faces Its Biggest Shake-Up
A Sun report says Line of Duty series 7 will launch in late January 2027. Here is what the BBC has confirmed so far about the return of AC-12, from the cast to the new case.
Line of Duty could return to BBC One as early as January 2027, bringing Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming and Ted Hastings back to television nearly six years after their last investigation.
The seventh series was previously expected to arrive around March, but a new report suggests the BBC is preparing to bring the drama forward to late January.
The broadcaster has not confirmed a transmission date, although cast member Laura Aikman had already indicated earlier this year that a January premiere was possible.

Filming finished in Belfast during July, with six hour-long episodes preparing to bring the anti-corruption team back together for an investigation involving a decorated police officer accused of serious sexual misconduct.
Is Line of Duty Returning in January?
The latest report suggests the BBC is considering a late-January premiere rather than waiting until March, which would make the drama one of its major programmes at the beginning of 2027.
Laura Aikman, who plays DC Paula Beckman, had previously suggested during a podcast appearance that the series was expected in January, providing an earlier indication of the proposed broadcast window.

However, the BBC has only officially confirmed a 2027 return, and there is still no announced date for the opening episode.
The production completed filming in Belfast in July, with Vicky McClure marking the end of the shoot alongside Martin Compston and Adrian Dunbar.
AC-12 Has Been Disbanded
The new series begins with a significant development for the team, as AC-12 has been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards.

Steve, Kate and Ted are reunited to investigate Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, played by Tom Weston-Jones, who commands Tactical Operations Unit 7.
Gough has built a reputation through successful operations against organised crime, but he faces allegations that he has abused his position of trust to act as a sexual predator.
The investigation raises the possibility that the allegations are being used to divert attention from a wider threat within the police.

That question gives the new series a connection to the programme’s long-running examination of institutional corruption, even after Ian Buckells was identified as the fourth corrupt officer known as H in 2021.
Robert Carlyle Joins a Familiar Cast
Robert Carlyle joins as DC Shaun Massie, a specialist rifle officer and experienced marksman working under Gough.
Described as a solitary figure who generally keeps his distance from colleagues, Massie becomes more personally involved when the allegations against his commanding officer emerge.

Laura Aikman plays DC Paula Beckman, with Levi Brown joining as DC Luke Tobin and Amy Leigh Hickman as DC Nira Rashid.
Several familiar characters also return, including Mark Bonnar as former Deputy Chief Constable Mike Dryden, Owen Teale as Chief Constable Philip Osborne, Perry Fitzpatrick as DS Chris Lomax and Christina Chong as DI Nicky Rogerson.
Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar reprise their roles as Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming and Ted Hastings, with Jed Mercurio writing all six episodes.

Could Series 7 Be the End of Line of Duty?
Compston has suggested that the seventh series brings the programme’s long-running story arc to a conclusion.
During a recent television appearance, he described the new episodes as particularly demanding to film and indicated that the investigation would provide a significant conclusion to the story developed across previous series.

His comments raise the possibility of a major ending for Steve, Kate and Ted, although the BBC has not announced that series seven will be the programme’s last.
The drama has previously returned after lengthy breaks, including the nearly six-year gap between the sixth and seventh series.
Where to Watch Line of Duty
Line of Duty series seven will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2027, with a late-January premiere currently reported but not confirmed.
The first six series are available on BBC iPlayer, allowing viewers to revisit the previous investigations before the new episodes begin.
An official launch date and trailer have yet to be announced.
