Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner are bringing a dangerous game of seduction, revenge and betrayal to home audiences as Les Liaisons Dangereuses becomes available through National Theatre at Home on Tuesday 3 November 2026.

Directed by Marianne Elliott, the production brings Christopher Hampton’s celebrated stage adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s eighteenth-century novel to viewers who missed the opportunity to see it in the theatre.

Rather than a new television adaptation, this is a filmed stage performance featuring two actors familiar to British audiences.

A Dangerous Rivalry Between Former Lovers

The story centres on the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two wealthy aristocrats who use romance and seduction to manipulate the people around them.

Their complicated relationship becomes a contest of influence and revenge, with both characters determined to prove their ability to control others. However, their schemes have serious consequences for the people caught between them, particularly when genuine feelings interfere with their carefully constructed plans.

Although the story is set in eighteenth-century France, its exploration of reputation, sexual double standards and social influence remains relevant. Merteuil must navigate a society that judges women’s behaviour far more harshly than men’s, while Valmont enjoys freedoms that allow him to pursue his ambitions with fewer consequences.

Who Stars in Les Liaisons Dangereuses?

Manville takes on the role of Merteuil, opposite Turner as Valmont. The production also features Monica Barbaro as Madame de Tourvel, whose involvement becomes central to the rivalry between the two former lovers.

Manville’s screen credits include The Crown, Mum and Phantom Thread, while Turner is known for Poldark, Being Human and Rivals. Barbaro has appeared in Top Gun: Maverick and A Complete Unknown.

Director Marianne Elliott previously worked on major theatre productions including War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Company, bringing extensive experience of adapting complex stories for the stage.
