Leeds Bradford Airport strike planned as passengers told what to expect
Leeds Bradford Airport passengers face possible disruption as almost 130 workers prepare to strike, although the airport expects near-normal operations.
Passengers travelling through Leeds Bradford Airport are being warned of possible disruption after almost 130 workers announced plans for strike action later this month.
The industrial action involves air traffic control, security, customer experience and cleaning staff. Hourly paid workers are due to walk out from 3am on Friday 16 October until 6am on Sunday 18 October, while air traffic control staff are scheduled to strike from 6am on Friday until 6am on Sunday.
The dispute centres on pay following the end of a previous four-year agreement. The union representing workers says some roles have fallen behind equivalent jobs at other airports and argues that the latest offer does not go far enough.
Leeds Bradford Airport has challenged suggestions that the action will necessarily close the airport. It says contingency planning is under way and, at this stage, it expects to operate near-normal services during the strike period.
That distinction is important for passengers. Travellers with flights booked between 16 and 18 October should not assume their flight is cancelled and should continue to follow instructions from their airline unless told otherwise.
The situation could also change before the strike begins if further talks produce an agreement. Passengers are therefore advised to keep checking their airline’s app, emails and flight status as the dates approach, particularly before travelling to the airport.
Any cancellations or significant timetable changes should be communicated directly by individual airlines.
The planned action comes during a major redevelopment of Leeds Bradford Airport, which is also introducing new passenger facilities throughout its terminal.
