KLM’s first Airbus A350-900 has arrived at Amsterdam Schiphol, bringing a new cabin and a quieter flying experience to its long-haul fleet. Toronto will be its first passenger destination in a few weeks, with Montreal, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Zanzibar set to follow.

The aircraft landed on Friday 2 October, marking a significant step in the airline’s fleet renewal. For travellers, the changes include more luggage space, new business-class suites and improvements designed to make longer journeys more comfortable.

What makes the A350 special?

The A350 combines newer engines, lightweight materials and an aerodynamic design to reduce the fuel needed for long-distance flights. It uses around 25% less fuel than previous-generation aircraft, while its noise footprint is approximately 40% smaller, reducing disturbance around airports.

Inside, passengers can expect one of the quietest cabins in its class. Larger overhead luggage compartments offer more room for bags, while adjustable ambient lighting and high-speed satellite connectivity are among the onboard features.

There are 331 seats across three cabins, including 271 in Economy and 26 in Premium Comfort, KLM’s premium economy option. Premium Comfort offers additional legroom and a dedicated dining experience for passengers seeking more space on a long flight.

The 34 World Business Class suites each have direct aisle access, allowing passengers to leave their seats without stepping past someone else. Their test results have now been approved by European aviation safety regulators, allowing certification to begin, although a date for making the seats available has not yet been confirmed.

Where will passengers find it?

Toronto is first in line, with five weekly A350 flights planned within KLM’s winter schedule of 12 weekly services to the city. The exact first passenger flight date remains unconfirmed, and further Canadian and African destinations will follow as more A350s join the fleet.

The aircraft also brings a piece of Dutch culture on board through its name, The Night Watch, inspired by Rembrandt’s celebrated painting. Its successor will be named Girl with a Pearl Earring, continuing a new fleet theme celebrating famous Dutch artworks.
