Irish Woman Started a Lesbian Hiking Group to Make Friends and Found Her Fiancée

When Nadine posted a video inviting lesbian women across Ireland to join her on a hiking adventure, she was simply hoping to find friendship and companionship.

Less than two years later, Womxn on the Rocks has developed into a community of around 125 women, while Nadine’s decision to put herself out there also led her to her fiancée

“Back in July 2025, I decided to put myself out there on TikTok and reach out to lesbian women across Ireland to join me on hiking adventures,” Nadine told SoapLandTV. “At the time, I was living in County Offaly in the Midlands, and I didn’t know any other like-minded women in my area.”

Travelling to Dublin or further afield to join existing groups was difficult because of Nadine’s work. With few opportunities to connect with other lesbian women locally, she decided to create the community she had been unable to find.

“I was feeling quite lonely and really wanted companionship, friendship, and the opportunity to meet other women I could connect with,” she explained. “So, rather than waiting for something to come along, I decided to create it myself.”

Nadine’s TikTok invitation produced a far greater response than she had anticipated. Around 20 women arrived at the Upper Glendalough car park for the first Womxn on the Rocks hike, ready to meet one another and begin the adventure.

Although two women travelled in Nadine’s car and helped settle her nerves, organising the gathering still represented a major personal step. She had placed herself at the centre of something new without knowing how the day would unfold.

“I’m not someone who naturally likes to be in the foreground,” Nadine admitted. “I usually find myself slipping into the background, so putting myself out there and suddenly being responsible for bringing a group of women together was a huge step outside my comfort zone.”

The decision would transform Nadine’s personal life as well as create a growing community. One of the women who contacted her before the organised hikes began would eventually become her fiancée.

“I met my fiancée through Womxn on the Rocks, before the hikes had even really started,” she revealed. “She reached out to me, we connected, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

Their relationship is not the only love story to have developed through the group. Another couple are now preparing to move in together and purchase their first home, while Nadine said a further couple have also found one another through the community.

Womxn on the Rocks was never created as a dating group, and hiking, friendship and companionship remain at its heart. Nadine is nevertheless delighted that bringing lesbian women together has allowed so many different connections to develop naturally.

“So many friendships have formed through the group, both within the hikes themselves and outside of them,” she said. “People have made genuine, lasting friendships and have built connections that go far beyond the walks.”

The messages Nadine continues to receive demonstrate how many women share the isolation she experienced in County Offaly.

Some parts of Ireland have established lesbian communities, while those living in other counties can struggle to find local groups, events and representation.

“A lot of the women who reach out to me aren’t necessarily looking for anything complicated,” Nadine said. “They’re simply looking for companionship, friendship, and a reason to get out of the house and meet other like-minded women.”

What began as one woman’s attempt to find companionship has now created opportunities for around 125 women. For Nadine, Womxn on the Rocks has become something deeply personal that she wants to protect as it continues growing.

“Well, it’s my baby,” she said. “I feel incredibly protective of it and, more importantly, of the women who are part of it.”
