Irish Lesbian Hiking Community Sets Its Sights on Scotland for Future Adventures

Womxn on the Rocks could eventually take its growing lesbian hiking community beyond Ireland, with Scotland currently at the top of founder Nadine’s wish list. She hopes the group’s future could include one or two-night adventures where women can explore new surroundings together.

“I’d love to organise hiking trips abroad, maybe starting with Scotland,” Nadine told SoapLandTV. “We can all get away together and experience somewhere new.”

There is no confirmed destination, date or itinerary at this stage, with Scotland remaining an ambition for the group’s future. However, the idea represents an exciting possible next chapter for a community that now connects around 125 women.

Any future trip would extend the friendships and sense of belonging already created through the group. Nadine wants Womxn on the Rocks to keep growing, but she is equally determined to protect everything that has made the community special.

“Ultimately, I’d love to see the community continue to grow and become even bigger, while still holding on to what makes it special,” she said. “At the moment, there are around 125 women within the wider community, including our WhatsApp group, which is incredible when I think back to how it all started.”

Growth is therefore about more than increasing membership or adding destinations. Nadine’s priority is maintaining a dedicated space where lesbian women can relax, connect and feel comfortable being themselves.

“Growth isn’t the only goal,” Nadine explained. “For me, it’s really important that no matter how big Womxn on the Rocks becomes, it remains a safe, welcoming and inclusive space specifically for lesbian women.”

That welcoming approach is particularly important because most women attend their first Womxn on the Rocks event by themselves. Arriving without knowing anyone can feel daunting, but coming alone is completely normal within the group.

“Very rarely does someone join one of our hikes with a friend or as part of an existing group,” Nadine said. “Most people come on their own, and I completely understand how daunting that can feel.”

Nadine believes the hardest part is finding the courage to approach everyone at the beginning. Once those opening moments have passed, introductions quickly develop into conversations and new connections.

“Once you get past those first few minutes, everything changes,” she said. “Before you know it, you’re chatting away and it feels like you’ve always been part of the group.”

The community continues between hikes through its WhatsApp group, where members can remain connected and hear about forthcoming activities. Nadine keeps a close eye on that space because ensuring women feel safe and welcome remains particularly important to her.

“We have a WhatsApp group, and I’m particularly protective of that space because I want it to remain somewhere women feel safe, comfortable and welcome,” she explained. “It means a huge amount to me, and I feel very strongly about protecting what we’ve created.”

The purpose of the community is also reflected in its distinctive name. Nadine replaced the “E” in women with an “X,” meaning that men are “Xed out” and establishing Womxn on the Rocks as a space specifically for lesbian women.

“I’m often asked about the meaning behind the name Womxn on the Rocks with an X, and the idea behind it is actually very simple,” Nadine said. “I’ve taken the ‘E’ out and replaced it with an ‘X’.”

For Nadine, the wordplay also carries a more powerful message about creating a place where lesbian women can meet, form connections and enjoy outdoor adventures together. That identity will remain central even if future trips take the community into Scotland and eventually other destinations.

“It represents creating a space specifically for lesbian women, where they can come together, connect and feel comfortable being themselves,” she explained. “That’s exactly how the name came about.”

Scotland may still be a future ambition, but anyone interested in joining Womxn on the Rocks can become part of its existing community now. Following the group’s social pages will also ensure members hear about forthcoming hikes and any future trips as details are announced.
