Home and Away Zane leaves Summer Bay after Diner humiliation

Zane’s attempt to build a new life in Summer Bay takes a painful turn in Home and Away as a difficult trial shift at the Diner leaves him questioning whether he really belongs in the Bay.

After learning the truth about Zane’s past, Marilyn remains determined to stand by him and believes getting work could help him move forward. Leah is still much less certain, but Marilyn refuses to give up on the idea of offering Zane a chance.

Her persistence eventually pays off when Leah agrees to let Zane complete a trial shift at the Diner. For Marilyn, it is exactly the opportunity she has been fighting for, but the reality quickly proves far more uncomfortable than she hoped.

Leah remains visibly wary of Zane from the beginning. When she sees him serving a customer, she tells him to concentrate instead on clearing tables and stocking, making it clear that she is keeping a close eye on everything he does.

Things become worse when Zane accidentally gives a customer the wrong order. Leah immediately pulls him up over the mistake, adding to the pressure he is already feeling as he tries to prove he deserves the job.

Another problem follows when Zane takes his break and begins eating an order that had been made twice by mistake. Leah notices the duplicate food and again assumes Zane is responsible, telling Marilyn that she needs to make sure he reports mistakes properly.

This time, however, Marilyn corrects her. The duplicate order was actually Marilyn’s error, leaving Leah forced to admit that she had blamed Zane for something he had not done.

Feeling guilty, Leah changes her approach and offers Zane another trial shift. On the surface, it appears he has finally been given the chance Marilyn wanted for him. Unfortunately, Zane then overhears a conversation that changes everything.

He hears Leah telling Marilyn that the only reason he received the trial in the first place was because Marilyn had pushed so hard for it. Leah also admits she hopes she does not end up regretting the decision.

For Zane, the comments appear to confirm one of his biggest fears. Rather than being accepted on his own merits, he realises Marilyn has been fighting battles on his behalf and putting herself in a difficult position with the people closest to her.

Instead of returning for his next shift, Zane decides to walk away. Marilyn is expecting him to arrive at the Diner, but Zane never turns up. He leaves behind a goodbye note explaining that he has decided to leave Summer Bay because he does not want to make Marilyn’s life any harder than it already is.

The decision is particularly painful because Marilyn has repeatedly made clear that she does not see Zane as a burden. She has stood by him after hearing the full story of his past and has pushed others to give him a genuine second chance.

Zane, however, appears to see the growing tension around him very differently. Alf remains suspicious, Leah is struggling to trust him and Marilyn is increasingly caught in the middle.

His departure therefore becomes less about one bad shift and more about whether Zane believes Summer Bay can ever really become home.

After serving his sentence, Zane arrived hoping to move forward, but rebuilding a life is proving far more complicated than simply starting again somewhere new. Even with Marilyn firmly in his corner, he is now questioning whether staying will only create more problems for the person who has supported him most.

The goodbye note leaves Marilyn facing the possibility that her efforts to help Zane may have come too late. Zane has been given a chance, but after hearing how reluctant Leah really was to offer it, he appears to have decided that leaving is easier than continuing to fight for acceptance.
