Apple WatchOS 27.3 Can Now Recall Conversations With New AI Features – But What About Privacy?
Apple's conversation-recalling Audio Intelligence features are now in developer testing, but not yet for the public.
Apple has begun testing two new artificial intelligence features that allow its latest Apple Watches to recall conversations, produce summaries and help users remember information they may have missed.
Live Rewind and Siri Recap are included in the watchOS 27.3 developer beta, following their announcement at Apple's September launch event. The technology could prove useful for remembering instructions, conversations and everyday information, but it also raises questions about privacy and how much a smartwatch should be listening to the people around it.
The features are currently being tested on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, with a compatible iPhone running Apple Intelligence also required.
What Is Apple Watch Live Rewind?
Live Rewind allows users to retrieve the previous 15 seconds of a conversation without asking someone to repeat themselves.

By pressing the Digital Crown twice, the watch displays a short text transcript of what was just said.
For example, someone who misses part of an announcement, struggles to hear directions or forgets something mentioned during a conversation could quickly check the wording on their wrist.
The feature could also provide practical assistance for people who have difficulty hearing or processing spoken information, although it is not a replacement for medical hearing support.
Users can save the text or ask Siri a follow-up question. Otherwise, the temporary snippet disappears after approximately 30 seconds.
How Does Siri Recap Work?
Siri Recap goes further by using Apple Intelligence to create summaries of conversations rather than displaying a word-for-word transcript.
The feature can identify the main subjects discussed and produce a title with key points, allowing users to revisit information later.
Someone discussing arrangements with friends, receiving instructions at work or making plans could use the feature to remember what was agreed without manually taking notes.
Unlike Live Rewind, Siri Recap can operate automatically during periods selected by the user, including schedules based on location or time.
Summaries are available through the Siri app and are automatically deleted after seven days unless the user chooses to save them.
Apple says sensitive information, including financial details, is filtered from the summaries.
Is Apple Watch Recording Your Conversations?
Privacy is likely to be one of the biggest concerns surrounding the technology, particularly because the watch microphone can continuously monitor nearby sounds when Audio Intelligence is enabled.
Apple says the system does not create or store conventional audio recordings. Instead, incoming sound is processed through isolated hardware within the S11 chip, preventing other applications and the operating system from accessing the raw audio.
The company also says the technology does not identify individual speakers or attach names to conversations. Live Rewind includes additional safeguards intended to alert people nearby when the feature is activated.
Even when the watch is in silent mode, it plays an audible chime and displays an animation and microphone indicator.
Siri Recap uses Apple's Private Cloud Compute system to generate summaries, with Apple maintaining that the information cannot be accessed by the company.
However, the distinction between processing conversations and storing audio recordings is important. The microphone still needs to detect speech for the features to work, meaning users may want to consider when and where they enable them.

Which Apple Watches Will Support the New AI Features?
The features require one of Apple's latest supported smartwatches and a compatible iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled.
The initial requirements include:
- Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4.
- A compatible iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled.
- watchOS 27.3 or a later supported version.
- English-language support during the initial rollout.
Older Apple Watch models are not included in the announced compatibility list, even if they receive other watchOS updates.
Apple also applies daily usage limits to certain AI features, meaning users may not have unlimited access to conversation summaries.
When Will Live Rewind and Siri Recap Be Available in the UK?
Both features are now included in the watchOS 27.3 developer beta, but this is testing software rather than a finished public release.
Apple has not confirmed the date when the features will become generally available to UK customers. The initial rollout is restricted to English and excludes the European Union, although that restriction does not automatically apply to the United Kingdom.
For UK Apple Watch owners, the safest approach is to wait for confirmation of the public release rather than installing developer software solely to access the new tools.
The technology could make smartwatches more useful as everyday memory aids, but its success may depend as much on users' confidence in the privacy protections as on the convenience of being able to revisit conversations.
