Home and Away Zane faces another huge first as driving test looms
Home and Away’s Zane prepares for his learner driver test as Marilyn helps him tackle another everyday milestone after years spent inside prison.
Zane turns his attention towards another piece of ordinary life he has never properly experienced in Home and Away as Marilyn encourages him to begin working towards his driving licence. After the emotional strain of sending his apology to Heidi, the new goal gives him something practical to focus on.
Zane remains anxious after posting the letter because he can no longer control what happens next. Marilyn recognises that sitting around waiting will only allow the uncertainty to consume him, so she looks for a healthier distraction.
She suggests that Zane start studying for his learner driver test. The pair spend the evening working through the material together, turning another basic milestone into an important step towards the independent life Zane is trying to build.
The significance is bigger than simply learning to drive. Zane has already had to set up a bank account, mobile phone, employment details and other parts of adult life that most people around him take for granted.
Getting a licence represents another move away from dependence. If he succeeds, it could eventually give Zane greater freedom to work, travel and build a life that does not revolve around relying on Marilyn and others to guide every decision.
The following morning, Zane heads off to sit his learner test. Marilyn remains firmly behind him, believing that practical goals are an important part of proving to himself that his future can contain more than guilt over the past.
At the same time, Leah and Justin remain unsettled by the letter Zane has sent to Heidi. Leah eventually admits to Marilyn that she is not convinced contacting his victim was the right decision, creating a new tension around the support Zane has been receiving.
That contrast gives Zane’s fresh start a more complicated edge. He is moving forward through work, independence and new experiences, but the past cannot simply be left behind because the person he hurt still has her own story.
The driving test offers Zane a goal he can control while the letter does not. For someone learning how to live outside prison, that distinction may become increasingly important as he tries to build a future without pretending the past never happened.
