Home and Away Zane celebrates major milestone as Marilyn clashes with Leah
Home and Away’s Zane celebrates earning his learner plates, but Marilyn and Leah clash over whether contacting his victim was ever the right decision.
Zane finally gets something worth celebrating in Home and Away when he reveals that he has successfully qualified for his learner plates. The achievement marks another important step towards independence, but the positive moment arrives while Marilyn and Leah are still locked in a difficult disagreement about his past.
Marilyn remains frustrated by Leah’s reaction to the apology letter Zane sent to his victim. She has watched him struggle with guilt, question whether he deserves the trust people have shown him and agonise over whether he should put his remorse into words, so she feels Leah has dismissed just how much emotional effort it took for him to send it.
Leah attempts to apologise, but it does little to repair the tension. Justin tries to explain why Leah remains so uncomfortable and points out that she cannot avoid imagining how she would feel if the man responsible for Theo’s death suddenly contacted her.
That comparison forces the two women to look at the situation from very different positions. Marilyn is focused on the man Zane is trying to become, while Leah cannot separate his wish to make amends from the possibility that receiving the letter could bring unwanted pain back into his victim’s life.
Zane is unaware of just how tense things have become when he arrives with news that he has passed the test for his learner plates. For him, gaining the right to begin learning to drive represents much more than another piece of paperwork.
Since arriving in Summer Bay, Zane has been catching up on basic experiences that most people his age barely think about. Building a working life, handling money and now learning to drive all give him pieces of independence that prison prevented him from developing normally.
Roo then sends Marilyn and Leah an invitation to a large party for Martha. Marilyn chooses not to attend and encourages Leah and Justin to go instead, deciding she and Zane can keep everything running at the Diner while they are away.
That choice keeps Marilyn firmly beside Zane at a time when his attempt to move forward remains under scrutiny. She wants him concentrating on the progress he is making rather than allowing every step to be swallowed by the worst thing he has ever done.
The learner plates give Zane a rare win, but the argument surrounding his letter proves his past is never going to sit completely separate from his future. The question now is whether he can continue building a life without expecting everyone around him to agree on what redemption should look like.
