Home and Away Theory: How Long Can Sonny Hide the Truth From Dana?

Dana and Sonny finally have the romantic breakthrough they wanted when a second proposal ends with an enthusiastic yes, but their new engagement begins with a serious secret already hanging over them. While Dana celebrates the future she believes they are building together, Sonny is quietly becoming more involved with Beau’s drug operation.

The contrast becomes impossible to ignore when Sonny leaves his own engagement celebration to supply drugs to one of Beau’s clients. Dana has no idea what he is really doing, raising a major question over how long Sonny can keep the truth from the woman he has just agreed to marry.

Dana believes they are starting their future

Dana’s engagement comes after the disappointment and embarrassment surrounding her original proposal plans. She confides in John about what she had hoped to do, while Eden helps Sonny understand the misunderstanding that has developed between them.

Once Sonny speaks to Dana, he makes his feelings clear. He explains that he would have turned up had he known what she was planning and confirms that he would have said yes.

Dana decides to take another chance and proposes again, with Sonny accepting. John, Mackenzie, Eden and Abigail then join the couple at Salt to celebrate what should be the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

Sonny is already keeping a major secret

The problem is that Dana does not know what Sonny has become involved in with Beau. During their engagement celebrations, one of Beau’s clients contacts Sonny looking for drugs and Sonny reluctantly leaves to complete the transaction.

That means the secrecy is no longer sitting somewhere in the background of Sonny’s life. It directly interrupts one of the most important moments in his relationship with Dana.

Sonny may not want to be in this position, but he still makes the decision to carry out the deal. Each time he continues helping Beau, he risks making it more difficult to eventually tell Dana the truth.

Alf could become another problem for Sonny

Sonny’s behaviour also attracts Alf’s attention when he notices that something seems unusual. There is no indication that Alf knows about the drugs or has worked out what Sonny is doing, but Sonny has nevertheless been noticed.

That matters because keeping the truth from Dana depends on Sonny being able to behave as though nothing is wrong. If his involvement with Beau continues to force unexplained disappearances or unusual behaviour, the people around him could begin asking questions.

Dana is also unlikely to remain oblivious forever if Sonny repeatedly finds himself distracted by Beau and his clients. An engagement brings the couple closer together, which could actually make maintaining such a significant secret more difficult.

Could Beau cost Sonny his relationship?

The real threat is not simply that Dana could discover Sonny has lied to her. She could also have to confront the fact that he continued his involvement after agreeing to marry her.

Sonny’s actions during the celebration underline that problem. Within hours of Dana receiving the answer she wanted, her fiancé is secretly carrying out a drug transaction rather than telling her what he has become involved in.

There is nothing in Monday’s events to confirm that Dana is about to discover the truth or that their engagement will end because of it. However, Sonny is creating a growing divide between the future Dana believes they are planning and the reality of what he is doing for Beau.

The longer that continues, the harder it may become for Sonny to explain why he kept Dana in the dark. Their engagement proves how much they want a future together, but Sonny may need to decide very quickly whether protecting Beau’s secret is worth putting that future at risk.
