Home and Away: Sonny’s Engagement Joy Takes a Dark Turn Within Hours

Sonny finally gets the future he wants with Dana when the couple become engaged, but one of their happiest moments is overshadowed almost immediately. Within hours of agreeing to marry Dana, Sonny is secretly leaving their celebration to supply drugs to one of Beau’s clients.

The contrast could hardly be greater. Dana believes she and Sonny are beginning an exciting new chapter together, while her new fiancé is already hiding something that could threaten the future they have just committed to sharing.

Dana and Sonny overcome their proposal disaster

The day begins with Dana still dealing with the disappointment of her original proposal plans going wrong. She confides in John about what she had intended to do, while Sonny also has to confront how badly he misunderstood the situation.

Eden helps Sonny see what happened from Dana’s perspective, prompting him to finally speak to her properly. Sonny explains that had he known Dana was planning to propose, he would have turned up and his answer would have been yes.

That gives Dana the reassurance she needs to try again. She proposes to Sonny for a second time and finally gets the response she hoped for when he accepts.

Their engagement celebrations begin at Salt

Dana and Sonny head to Salt following the proposal, where John, Mackenzie, Eden and Abigail join them to celebrate. After the confusion that surrounded Dana’s first attempt, the couple finally have the opportunity to enjoy being newly engaged.

It is also a significant moment for the people who helped them reach this point. John has supported Dana through her proposal plans, while Eden has helped Sonny understand how badly things went wrong between them.

For Dana, there is every reason to believe the difficult part is now behind them. She has the answer she wanted from Sonny and can finally begin thinking about what comes next for them as a couple.

Beau’s drug operation interrupts their happiness

Sonny knows there is another problem Dana has no idea about. His involvement with Beau does not disappear simply because he has become engaged, and the reality of that becomes clear during the celebrations.

One of Beau’s clients contacts Sonny looking for drugs. Rather than staying with Dana, Sonny reluctantly leaves to complete the transaction, bringing the dangerous secret directly into their engagement celebrations.

The speed with which the situation intrudes on their happiness is particularly striking. Sonny has barely had time to celebrate agreeing to marry Dana before he is being pulled away by something he cannot openly explain to her.

Alf notices Sonny acting unusually

Sonny manages to keep the real reason for his departure from Dana, but his behaviour does not go completely unnoticed. Alf spots that something appears unusual, although he does not know that Sonny is supplying drugs.

That creates another complication for Sonny because his secret depends on the people around him accepting his behaviour without asking too many questions. If Beau and his clients continue demanding his attention, Sonny may find that increasingly difficult.

There is no suggestion that Alf has uncovered the truth at this stage. Even so, being noticed at all is a warning sign for Sonny when Dana, John and their friends are all close by.

Has Sonny put his engagement at risk already?

Sonny clearly wants to marry Dana, and his acceptance of her proposal gives her the reassurance she was looking for. The problem is not his commitment to their relationship, but what he is choosing not to tell her.

Dana is celebrating their engagement without knowing her fiancé has left to carry out a drug transaction. If she eventually discovers what Sonny has been doing for Beau, the secrecy surrounding his involvement could become as important as the drugs themselves.

For now, Dana and Sonny are officially engaged and surrounded by people celebrating their happiness. Yet Sonny’s actions ensure their new beginning already carries a dangerous secret, and Beau’s operation is showing no sign of staying safely outside their relationship.
