Home and Away: Sonny Leaves His Engagement Celebration to Deal Drugs

Sonny should be celebrating one of the happiest moments of his life after becoming engaged to Dana, but his involvement with Beau leaves him leading a dangerous double life almost immediately. While Dana celebrates their future with the people closest to them, Sonny secretly leaves to supply drugs to one of Beau’s clients.

The decision raises the stakes considerably for Sonny, who now has far more to lose if his activities are exposed. Worse still, Alf notices his unusual behaviour, suggesting Sonny may not be hiding his secret nearly as well as he thinks.

Sonny’s secret threatens a huge moment with Dana

Dana and Sonny’s engagement comes after an awkward misunderstanding over her original proposal plans. After Dana confides in John and Eden helps Sonny understand what has happened, Sonny makes it clear that he would have turned up had he known Dana intended to propose and that his answer would have been yes.

Dana asks him again and this time gets the response she wanted. Sonny accepts, before the newly engaged couple celebrate at Salt with John, Mackenzie, Eden and Abigail.

It should give Sonny every reason to concentrate on Dana and the future they are planning together. Instead, his connection to Beau intrudes on their celebrations almost immediately.

Beau’s client contacts Sonny

Sonny receives a message from one of Beau’s clients looking for drugs, putting him in an increasingly difficult position. Rather than refusing to become further involved, Sonny reluctantly leaves the engagement celebrations to complete the transaction.

That makes this more than a secret Sonny can simply put aside while spending time with Dana. He is now actively supplying one of Beau’s clients at the same time as his fiancée celebrates their commitment upstairs.

Dana has no idea why Sonny really needs to leave, making the contrast particularly uncomfortable. She has just agreed to build a future with him while Sonny is keeping something from her that could have serious consequences if discovered.

Alf notices something is wrong

Sonny may believe he can keep the two sides of his life separate, but Alf notices his unusual behaviour. There is nothing to suggest Alf knows Sonny is dealing drugs or understands why he leaves, but simply attracting his attention could prove significant.

Alf has known Sonny throughout his time in Summer Bay, meaning unexplained behaviour is unlikely to pass completely unnoticed. If Sonny continues disappearing or acting strangely whenever Beau or his clients contact him, questions could quickly become harder to avoid.

The danger is not simply whether Sonny is caught completing a transaction. Every unexplained absence risks giving Dana, John or the other people around him another reason to wonder what he is hiding.

How much does Sonny now have to lose?

Sonny’s engagement makes his continued involvement with Beau even more serious because Dana is planning a future based on what she currently believes about the man she loves. The longer Sonny keeps his activities secret, the more difficult that conversation could become if the truth eventually emerges.

There is also a sharp contrast between Sonny and the people celebrating with him. John has supported Dana through the proposal difficulties, while Eden helped steer Sonny towards repairing the misunderstanding, and Mackenzie and Abigail join them in celebrating the positive outcome.

None of them know what Sonny is doing when he slips away. For now, Dana has her engagement ring and the answer she desperately wanted, but Sonny has given himself another secret to protect at exactly the moment when honesty between them matters most.
