Home and Away Marilyn finally gets Zane his Diner chance

Marilyn finally gets the breakthrough she has been fighting for in Home and Away when Leah agrees to give Zane a trial shift at the Diner. After repeatedly insisting that Zane deserves a genuine second chance, Marilyn believes the job could help him begin building a proper future in Summer Bay.

Leah has remained uncertain about Zane ever since learning more about his past, but Marilyn refuses to give up on the idea of employing him. She points out how busy the Diner can be and keeps pressing Leah until she eventually agrees to offer Zane a trial.

For Marilyn, the decision feels like an important step forward. She has already made it clear that Zane has served his sentence and should not be permanently defined by what he did as a teenager, so helping him find work becomes a practical way of backing up that belief.

Zane returns to the Diner and accepts the opportunity, but the shift soon becomes far more uncomfortable than Marilyn hoped. Leah remains visibly cautious around him and tells Zane to concentrate on clearing tables and stocking when she notices him serving a customer.

Things become more difficult when Zane accidentally gives the wrong order to a customer. Leah immediately pulls him up over the mistake, adding to the pressure he is already under while trying to prove himself.

Later, Leah notices Zane eating a duplicate order during his break and assumes he is responsible for another error. She tells Marilyn that Zane needs to make sure he owns up when mistakes happen, only for Marilyn to reveal that the duplicate order was actually her fault.

The misunderstanding leaves Leah feeling guilty for blaming Zane too quickly. She tries to make amends by offering him another trial shift, appearing to give Marilyn exactly what she had been hoping for.

However, the damage is not fully repaired. Zane later overhears Leah telling Marilyn that the only reason he was given the opportunity in the first place was because Marilyn had pushed so hard for it.

He also hears Leah admit that she hopes she does not end up regretting the decision. For Zane, the conversation confirms that Marilyn has been putting herself in an increasingly difficult position simply because she wants to help him.

Rather than return for his next trial shift, Zane decides not to show up. He leaves Marilyn a goodbye note explaining that he has chosen to leave Summer Bay because he does not want to make her life any harder than it already is.

The decision turns Marilyn’s small victory into a devastating setback. She fought to get Zane through the Diner door, only for him to walk away after realising just how much pressure his presence was placing on her relationships with the people around her.

For Marilyn, the outcome is especially painful because she never viewed helping Zane as a burden. She wanted him to have the chance to prove who he is now, but the reluctance surrounding his trial ultimately leaves Zane feeling as though he does not belong.
