Home and Away: Mali Becomes a Beach Hero as Dr Amelia Helps Mabel

Home and Away will place Mali Hudson at the centre of a dramatic beach rescue as he races into the water to help a woman struggling in the sea.

In coming scenes due to air in the UK, Mali is running a surf class when a woman named Mabel gets into difficulty and calls out for help. Mali immediately looks for assistance, but he is alarmed to realise that there are no lifesavers on duty.

With nobody else available to respond, Mali tells his students to raise the alarm before rushing into the water himself. He reaches Mabel and manages to bring her back to shore, where Dr Amelia Carlisle runs over to help.

Amelia takes charge while they wait for an ambulance, and Mabel begins to recover. However, Mali is left shaken by how close the incident came to having a far more serious outcome.  

Mali acts without hesitation

The emergency begins during what should have been an ordinary surf lesson, with Mali responsible for a group of students on the beach.

When Mabel starts struggling, Mali quickly assesses the situation and gives his class clear instructions. He does not leave them without guidance or wait for somebody else to take responsibility.

Once Mali realises that there is no lifesaver present, he responds himself. He enters the water, reaches Mabel and gets her safely back onto the beach.

The sequence makes the roles clear. Mali carries out the water rescue and brings Mabel ashore. Amelia then provides help on the sand and takes control of the situation while an ambulance is on its way.

Both characters make an important contribution, but Mali is the person who spots the danger, raises the alarm and races into the sea when nobody else is available.

Dr Amelia helps after Mali completes the rescue

Amelia arrives once Mali has brought Mabel back onto the sand. She rushes over to help and takes charge while they wait for further medical assistance.

The scene continues Amelia’s introduction as Summer Bay’s new doctor. Played by Nicole da Silva, Amelia has already been placed at the centre of a major hospital emergency since arriving in the Bay.

Her first appearance began near the surf club after Lacey suffered a bluebottle sting. Amelia’s medical knowledge impressed Alf, before viewers discovered that she works as an emergency department doctor at Northern Districts Hospital.

Later that day, David was rushed into hospital after Richie accidentally shot him. Amelia took charge of his treatment as doctors fought to save him.  

During Mabel’s emergency, however, the rescue itself remains Mali’s achievement. Amelia’s role begins after Mabel has been brought safely out of the water.

Mali demands answers from John

Following the rescue, Mali wants to understand why the beach had been left without proper supervision.

He finds John Palmer, who has been in Yabbie Creek trying to secure sponsorship for the surf club. John is horrified when Mali tells him that Mabel got into difficulty while nobody was watching the water.

Mali also points out that the beach flags had not been put out.

John explains that the roster fell apart when the only available lifesaver called in sick. Dana could not cover because she was working a hospital shift, while several regular volunteers have either moved on or become unavailable because of their jobs.

Mali questions why more people have not been recruited, but John explains that new volunteers must receive the necessary training before they can join the lifesaving roster.  

Mali offers to help the surf club

The club needs money to run Bronze Medallion courses for new recruits, but its finances are already under pressure.

Its new backup generator and several power tools were recently stolen. Although the generator was insured, the club still has to pay a significant insurance excess, leaving less money available for training.

Once Mali understands the scale of the problem, he offers to help John with the surf club in any way he can.

John asks him to spread the word among his surf students so potential recruits can come forward once the club can afford to run the necessary courses.

The conversation shows that Mali is not only concerned about what happened to Mabel. He also wants to support John’s efforts to prevent the same situation happening again.
