Home and Away: Levi Makes a Terrifying Demand as His Condition Worsens
Levi is forced to make a frightening medical decision in Home and Away when his trapped hand deteriorates and Cash tells him his fingers are turning blue.
Levi is forced to become his own doctor as his climbing nightmare takes an increasingly frightening turn. Trapped beneath a huge boulder and unable to see his injured hand, he has to rely on Cash to describe what is happening before making a terrifying decision about how they should attempt to free him.
When Cash reveals that Levi’s fingers are badly swollen and beginning to turn blue, Levi knows they cannot simply continue waiting. He tells Cash to move the boulder regardless of the consequences, even if getting him free means breaking his arm.
Levi wakes to a frightening situation
Levi slowly regains consciousness to find that his ordeal is far from over. His arm remains pinned beneath the boulder, while the pain is severe enough for him to drift in and out of consciousness.
Mali helps Cash abseil down to reach Levi before lowering supplies to the pair. With Cash now able to stay beside him, Mali heads off through the bush in the hope of finding enough phone reception to summon professional help.
That leaves Levi and Cash facing the immediate problem themselves. Cash tries to shift the enormous rock, but his efforts fail and there is no indication of how long they may have to wait before rescuers can reach them.
Cash reveals Levi’s fingers are turning blue
The most alarming development comes when Levi asks Cash about the hand he cannot see. Cash has to tell him that his fingers are swollen and beginning to turn blue, immediately giving Levi a much clearer picture of the danger he could be facing.
Levi’s medical knowledge makes his reaction particularly significant. Rather than reassuring Cash that they can afford to wait, he concludes that the pressure needs to be removed and gives his friend a frightening instruction.
He wants Cash to roll the boulder away. Even if the attempt breaks Levi’s arm, he believes they need to act.
Levi has to make the decision as a surgeon and patient
There is something particularly brutal about Levi being medically qualified enough to understand what may be happening while being physically unable to treat himself. He knows his hand is deteriorating, but he cannot even see the injury clearly enough to assess it without Cash.
His profession also makes protecting the use of his hand especially important. Levi has built his career as a surgeon, meaning an injury affecting his hand has the potential to carry consequences far beyond the immediate accident.
Monday’s events do not establish what lasting damage, if any, Levi will suffer. What they do show is that he considers the situation urgent enough to accept the possibility of one serious injury in an attempt to prevent another.
Cash must follow Levi’s instructions
Levi can make the medical judgement, but Cash is the person who may have to carry it out. That puts both men under extraordinary pressure as they wait for Mali to find reception and bring help.
Cash has already attempted to shift the boulder without success, and now he knows exactly what Levi is prepared to risk. Following his friend’s instruction could leave Levi with a broken arm, but refusing to act could mean precious time continues to pass while his hand remains trapped.
Meanwhile, Mackenzie, Eden and Abigail are still away from the scene and only begin to worry when they fail to hear from the men. They have no idea that Levi is making one of the most frightening decisions of his life, or that Cash may soon have to act on it.
Levi may be the patient, but his medical experience means he understands the stakes better than almost anyone could. Now he needs Cash to trust him, even when following his instructions could mean deliberately risking further injury to get him free.
