Home and Away: Lacey’s Emotional Words Leave David With a Painful Reminder

Lacey’s determination to protect David leads to an emotional moment between father and daughter when their disagreement over his return to police work follows them home. David is angry that Lacey and Jo have interfered, but Lacey makes clear that her actions come from something deeply rooted in their family.

She reminds David that their mum taught her that family always looks out for one another. For David, the words bring a painful reminder of his late wife into a disagreement that has already exposed just how worried his daughters remain about him.

Lacey’s concern begins when Jo reveals that David has returned to the police station. She immediately questions whether their father is ready, although Leah, Justin and Alf encourage the sisters to give him the space to make his own decisions.

David is determined to prove that he can cope, but his return is not straightforward. Cash welcomes his boss back and tries to help him settle in, only to notice that David appears uncomfortable at his desk.

The situation becomes particularly difficult when Ritchie’s file appears among David’s paperwork. Memories of the shooting come flooding back, leaving David struggling before he eventually turns his attention towards newly released prisoner Zane Talbot.

Lacey does not witness everything happening at David’s desk, but she and Jo are worried enough to ask Cash to keep an eye on him. Jo later advises her sister against going to the station herself, but Lacey cannot simply sit back and hope their father is coping.

Her arrival eventually exposes the arrangement with Cash, leaving David furious. He does not appreciate his daughters involving themselves in his professional life and makes clear that he believes they have crossed a line.

David also directs his anger towards Cash, warning him to stay in his lane or face being put on night duty for the next six months. Cash privately finds something reassuring in seeing some of David’s familiar fire return, but that does little to resolve the disagreement within the family.

Once Lacey and David are back home, their confrontation takes on a much more personal tone. Lacey accepts that interfering in his work was not okay, but she refuses to treat caring about him as something she should simply switch off.

Her reminder about their mum explains why. Lacey has grown up believing that family members protect one another, and after everything they have been through, she is trying to live by something her mother taught her.

It also leaves David facing the difficult reality that his daughters are dealing with their own fears. He wants to regain his independence and return to the career he knows, while Lacey and Jo are watching their father enter an environment capable of bringing painful memories back without warning.

Lacey may not always get the balance right, and she acknowledges that herself. What she cannot do is stop being David’s daughter simply because he wants to prove he can handle things alone.

The disagreement therefore becomes about much more than David going back to work. Lacey’s emotional reminder brings their late mum back into the heart of the family story and makes clear why, however frustrated David becomes, his daughters are unlikely to stop looking out for him.
