Home and Away: David Threatens Cash After Discovering His Daughters’ Secret Plan
David lashes out at Cash in Home and Away after discovering Lacey and Jo secretly asked the officer to keep an eye on him following his return to work.
David’s difficult return to police work leads to a fiery confrontation with Cash when he discovers Lacey and Jo have secretly asked the officer to keep an eye on him. Already determined to prove he is capable of doing his job again, David is furious to learn that his daughters have brought one of his colleagues into their concerns about him.
Lacey and Jo are worried from the moment David heads back to the station. While Leah, Justin and Alf encourage them to give their father some space, Lacey struggles to accept that returning to work automatically means David is ready for everything the job could bring.
Their fears appear justified when David struggles after arriving at the station. Cash is pleased to welcome his boss back, but quickly notices that David is uncomfortable behind his desk and suggests getting away from the paperwork for a while.
David refuses to step away, determined to continue with his duties. However, Ritchie’s file soon appears among his paperwork and brings memories of the shooting flooding back, leaving David struggling as he tries to regain his composure.
He eventually turns his attention towards Zane Talbot, a newly released prisoner who has arrived in Summer Bay after serving ten years behind bars. Focusing on Zane gives David another case to deal with, but his reaction to Ritchie’s file has already shown just how difficult his return could be.
Lacey and Jo decide they cannot simply ignore their concerns and ask Cash to watch David. Cash agrees, leaving him caught between respecting his boss and understanding why David’s daughters are so worried about him.
Despite Jo advising her not to confront their father at work, Lacey goes to the station herself. Her intervention ultimately exposes the arrangement with Cash, and David is far from impressed when he discovers what has been happening behind his back.
David turns his anger towards Cash and warns him to stay in his lane, threatening to put him on night duty for the next six months. For Cash, it is an uncomfortable position to be in when he was only trying to respond to the concerns of David’s family.
There is, however, another side to David’s outburst. Cash privately recognises a glimpse of the old David in his anger, giving him some reassurance after seeing how unsettled his boss has been since returning to the station.
That does not resolve the deeper problem between David and his daughters. David wants Lacey and Jo to trust him to make his own decisions, while they are watching someone they love attempt to return to a demanding job after everything he has recently experienced.
Lacey later acknowledges that interfering with David’s work was not okay, but she refuses to apologise for wanting to protect him. She reminds her father that their mother taught her that family always looks out for one another, bringing the argument back to the loss that continues to shape all three of them.
David may have been cleared to return to work, but his first days back are proving that recovery is not as simple as returning to his desk. Cash, Lacey and Jo are all trying to support him in different ways, even if David currently sees their concern as interference.
His threat towards Cash shows that some of David’s familiar fire remains, but his reaction to Ritchie’s file also suggests there are moments he is still finding extremely difficult. The challenge now is whether David can accept that his daughters are trying to protect him without feeling that they are taking control of his life.
