Home and Away: David Rejects Amelia as She Considers Leaving Summer Bay

David and Amelia are forced to confront the feelings that have been hanging between them, but their long-awaited conversation does not bring the outcome Amelia hoped for. David finally admits he is not ready for a relationship and cannot promise that will ever change, leaving Amelia facing the possibility that there may be nothing keeping her in Summer Bay.

Their awkwardness has become increasingly difficult to ignore, particularly after Amelia made her feelings clear. David has struggled to respond, with his grief over his late wife continuing to influence whether he believes he can allow himself to move forward with somebody else.

Their paths cross again when Amelia takes David’s statement at the hospital, creating an opportunity for them to address what has been left unsaid. Rather than continuing to avoid the subject, David finally tells Amelia where he stands.

David admits that he is not ready to begin a relationship with her. More painfully for Amelia, he cannot offer any reassurance that he simply needs more time, because he acknowledges that he does not know whether his feelings about moving on will ever change.

The admission gives Amelia an answer, but it is not the one she wanted. She has already been open about how she feels about David, while his response leaves her facing the reality that waiting for him could mean waiting for something he cannot promise will ever happen.

David’s decision is rooted in the grief he continues to carry following the death of his wife. His feelings for Amelia have forced him to confront the possibility of another relationship, but he remains unable to make that emotional step.

The pair ultimately agree to remain friends, although Amelia is clearly disappointed. After the uncertainty and David’s earlier silence, she now knows he cannot give her the relationship she had hoped might develop between them.

The situation becomes even more significant because Amelia may not be staying in Summer Bay indefinitely. She later opens up to Leah about what happened and reveals that her hospital contract could soon come to an end.

Rather than having a new relationship giving her another reason to remain in the Bay, Amelia begins to consider whether leaving might actually be for the best. David’s rejection therefore risks becoming much more final than either of them may currently realise.

Leah has already witnessed the awkwardness developing between the pair, while Justin has also found himself hearing David’s side of the situation. David previously decided that avoiding Amelia was the easiest way to deal with their feelings, but their hospital conversation means avoidance is no longer an option.

Amelia now has clarity, even if it hurts. She knows David cannot promise her a future, and with her work situation potentially giving her an opportunity to leave Summer Bay, she may decide there is little reason to continue hoping he will eventually change his mind.

For David, saying no may feel like the only decision he can make while he continues struggling with his grief. However, Amelia considering leaving introduces another possibility he may eventually have to confront: by the time he works out what he truly wants, she might no longer be there.

Their friendship remains intact for now, but Amelia’s disappointment is clear and her future in Summer Bay is uncertain. David has finally given her the answer she was waiting for, and it could ultimately be the answer that sends her away.
