Home and Away: David faces painful truth about moving on from Kristina

David is forced to confront one of the most painful questions of his recovery when Jared challenges him to consider whether grief is preventing him from moving forward. The session leaves David reflecting on Kristina, Amelia and the future he has repeatedly refused to imagine.

David begins by looking through old photographs of Kristina with Jared, finding comfort in memories of the life they shared. Jared recognises the importance of remembering her with love, but he also questions why David has brought those photographs into a session that was meant to focus on Amelia.

The question immediately puts David on the defensive, because he is unwilling to consider the possibility of another relationship. He insists that moving forward would feel like betraying the vows he made to Kristina and the life they had planned together.

Jared carefully asks David what Kristina would want for him now, hoping to help him look at the situation from another perspective. David reacts angrily and points out that Kristina would want to be alive, exposing just how raw his grief remains beneath the progress he has made.

Rather than challenging that response, Jared acknowledges the depth of David’s pain and reassures him that his feelings are valid. He understands that grief does not follow a simple path, especially when David is still trying to rebuild his life while supporting Jo and Lacey.

As the session continues during a walk, Jared asks whether David is resisting his feelings for Amelia because he is worried about how his daughters might react. David rejects that suggestion and explains that his hesitation comes from the promise he made when he married Kristina.

Jared then reminds him of the words at the heart of that promise, including the commitment that lasts until death parts a married couple. The reminder does not erase David’s guilt, but it forces him to consider whether loving Kristina means he must remain alone forever.

David is left with an even harder question when Jared asks why he requested the session if he has already decided there can never be a future with Amelia. If he truly felt nothing, Jared suggests there would have been no reason for him to seek urgent help after learning about her feelings.

That observation leaves David with plenty to consider once the session comes to an end. His decision to speak to Jared may show that Amelia’s confession has affected him more deeply than he is prepared to admit.

The conversation also highlights how complicated moving forward can be after a devastating loss. David is not simply deciding whether he likes Amelia, because any new relationship is tied to his memories of Kristina, his responsibilities as a father and his fear of leaving the past behind.

Jared does not pressure David towards any particular answer, and instead gives him the space to understand his own emotions. That approach allows David to consider the possibility that finding happiness again would not erase the marriage or family he shared with Kristina.

Whether David can accept that idea remains uncertain, particularly while his grief is still so close to the surface. Even so, the counselling session may represent an important step towards recognising that moving forward and remembering Kristina do not have to be opposing choices.
