Home and Away: Dana Realises Sonny Is Hiding Something

Dana’s excitement over becoming engaged to Sonny is threatened almost immediately when she realises her new fiancé is hiding something from her. After publicly declaring how much she trusts Sonny and how lucky she feels to be marrying her soulmate, Dana later notices that his behaviour does not match the happiness of the occasion.

Sonny knows exactly why. His involvement with Beau and the steroid operation is weighing heavily on him, but even when Dana gives him the opportunity to explain what is wrong, he cannot bring himself to tell her the truth.

Their engagement party should be a chance for Dana and Sonny to enjoy one of the biggest moments of their relationship. Dana certainly embraces the occasion, speaking openly about her feelings for Sonny and the trust she has in the man she intends to marry.

Her words only increase Sonny’s guilt. Dana believes there are no major secrets standing between them, while Sonny knows he is concealing his connection to Beau and everything that has followed from it.

The contrast becomes increasingly difficult for Sonny to hide. Instead of being able to match Dana’s excitement, he struggles with what he knows, and his fiancée eventually notices that something is not right.

Once the couple are alone, Dana asks Sonny what is wrong. It is a crucial opportunity for him to come clean, particularly after hearing just how much trust Dana has placed in him.

Sonny still cannot do it. Rather than reveal his involvement with Beau, he keeps the truth from Dana and leaves the biggest problem in their new engagement unresolved.

The decision could make things much harder for Sonny because Dana has now recognised that there is something he is not telling her. She may not know what the secret is, but Sonny can no longer assume his guilt is completely invisible to the woman who knows him so well.

At the same time, Remi is putting pressure on Sonny from another direction. He has become increasingly concerned about Beau and Sonny’s “gym buddy” connection and tries to establish how much Harper knows about what is going on.

Harper misunderstands Remi’s questions and believes jealousy may be behind his interest. Beau also becomes focused on Remi after seeing him speaking privately with Harper, without realising that Remi’s real concern is the steroid operation.

Eventually, Remi confronts Sonny directly and makes clear that his patience is running out. Sonny needs to sort out the situation with Beau or Remi is prepared to involve the police.

That leaves Sonny with two problems he can no longer easily avoid. Dana knows something is wrong and wants honesty from him, while Remi knows enough about his involvement with Beau to threaten police action.

The timing could hardly be worse. Dana has just spoken in front of their friends about trusting Sonny and believing she has found her soulmate, making his inability to tell her the truth even more significant.

There is nothing in these scenes to suggest Dana has worked out exactly what Sonny is hiding. However, she has noticed the change in him, and that could be the first crack in a secret Sonny has been desperately trying to keep away from their relationship.

Sonny now has far more than Beau to worry about. Unless he finds a way out of the situation, he risks Dana discovering that while she was celebrating their engagement and declaring her complete trust in him, her fiancé already knew there was something important he was refusing to tell her.
