Dana makes one of her biggest decisions yet in Home and Away when she ends her relationship with Sonny and then reveals she is leaving Summer Bay altogether. After repeatedly trying to rebuild trust following his lies and steroid use, Dana finally reaches the point where love is no longer enough to keep them together.

Sonny insists they can repair the damage if they communicate better, but Dana is exhausted by everything that has happened. She initially asks for some space, only for Sonny to return and push for another conversation before she is ready.

Dana eventually tells him the relationship is over. Sonny tries to argue that they can still fix things, but Dana makes clear that she cannot continue living with the constant uncertainty over whether she is being told the truth.

The breakup becomes even more final when Dana reveals she is moving out. Soon afterwards, Harper tells her that she plans to leave Summer Bay with Archie because she no longer believes the Bay can keep them safe from Beau in the future.

That gives Dana an idea which changes everything. Harper originally came to Summer Bay to support her, and Dana decides it is now her turn to return that loyalty by leaving with her sister.

Sonny is stunned when Dana tells him she is not simply moving out but leaving the Bay entirely. Their final goodbye is painful because the love between them is still obvious, but Dana refuses to let those feelings override the reasons she has chosen to walk away.

John is also devastated when Dana tells him she is leaving. Their emotional hug leaves John in tears as he reminds her how highly he thinks of her and assures her that she will always have his support.

For Sonny, the reality only fully hits after Dana has gone. He breaks down and admits he believes he has lost her forever, leaving him facing the consequences of everything that brought their relationship to this point.
