Home and Away: Dana begins thinking about marrying Sonny after Alf's heartfelt advice

Dana begins looking at her future with Sonny in a very different way after spending an unexpectedly meaningful afternoon with Alf. What starts as an unwanted fishing lesson leaves her quietly considering whether marriage could be the next step in their relationship.

While carrying out her lifeguard duties, Dana notices Alf approaching as she surveys the ocean through her binoculars. Remembering that she won a fishing lesson with him during the Surf Club fundraiser, she immediately tries to avoid being drawn into making arrangements.

Alf has already spotted her and is far too enthusiastic to let the prize go unused. He asks Dana to find time for the lesson, leaving her searching for a polite way to admit that fishing has never appealed to her.

Dana later turns to John for support and finally works up the confidence to decline the prize. She approaches Alf intending to explain that he would be better off taking somebody who genuinely wants to learn, but his excitement soon weakens her resolve.

Before Dana can properly object, she finds herself heading towards the beach with Alf and a pair of fishing rods. She is clearly outside her comfort zone, although the relaxed setting gradually helps her settle into the experience.

Once they are seated in deckchairs overlooking the water, the fishing lesson becomes a chance for the pair to talk. Alf asks how Sonny is doing, prompting Dana to reflect on the determination he has shown throughout his recovery and how proud she is of his progress.

Hearing Dana speak so warmly about Sonny causes Alf to think about his own marriage to Martha and the difficulties created by living apart. He encourages Dana to value the relationship she has and make the most of the happiness they have found together.

Alf’s words stay with Dana after their afternoon by the ocean comes to an end. His belief that she and Sonny share something special leaves her wondering whether she has been too cautious about thinking beyond the present.

The fundraiser also leaves Alf feeling more connected to Summer Bay after his time away. When he returns to the Diner, he tells Leah that seeing the community come together has renewed his appreciation for the place and the people who call it home.

Dana later heads back to the Surf Club, where John reveals that the winner of his free celebrancy package no longer intends to claim it. Spotting an opportunity to tease her, he asks whether she might be planning to propose to Sonny and make use of the prize herself.

Dana quickly insists that she is nowhere near ready to make such a serious commitment. Once John leaves, however, her reaction softens as Alf’s advice returns to the front of her mind and the possibility of marriage suddenly feels less distant.
