Home and Away: Dana and Sonny Get Engaged, But He’s Already Hiding a Dangerous Secret

Dana finally gets the answer she wanted from Sonny as the couple become engaged, putting their awkward first proposal attempt firmly behind them. But while Dana believes they are celebrating the beginning of their future together, Sonny is already keeping a dangerous secret from his new fiancée.

His involvement with Beau takes another troubling turn when one of Beau’s clients contacts him looking for drugs. Instead of enjoying his engagement celebration with Dana, Sonny finds himself slipping away to complete the transaction without her knowing.

Dana opens up to John

After her proposal plans fall apart, Dana admits to John that she had intended to ask Sonny to marry her. She is left embarrassed by how badly things went, particularly after putting so much thought into creating the moment she wanted for them.

Sonny has also misunderstood what Dana was planning, but Eden helps him see the situation differently. Their conversation eventually pushes Sonny towards Dana, giving the couple an opportunity to clear up what happened rather than allowing the misunderstanding to grow.

When Sonny explains himself, he reveals something Dana desperately wanted to hear. Had he known she was going to propose, he would have turned up and, more importantly, he would have said yes.

Dana proposes to Sonny again

With Sonny finally making his feelings clear, Dana gets another opportunity to ask the question. She proposes for a second time and Sonny accepts, giving the couple the happy outcome their first attempt failed to deliver.

The newly engaged pair head to Salt, where John, Mackenzie, Eden and Abigail join them to celebrate. For Dana, it should be a chance to enjoy the fact that she and Sonny have committed to building a life together.

Yet Sonny knows there is another side to his life that Dana does not currently see. His connection to Beau’s drug operation is still hanging over him, and becoming engaged only raises the stakes if the truth eventually reaches her.

Sonny secretly leaves to supply drugs

The threat to their happiness becomes clear during the celebrations when Sonny receives a message from one of Beau’s clients. He is expected to supply the drugs, forcing him to choose between ignoring the request and continuing with something he has already become involved in.

Sonny reluctantly leaves the celebrations and carries out the transaction. It creates a stark contrast with what Dana believes is happening, as she celebrates their engagement while her new fiancé secretly deals drugs behind her back.

His movements also attract attention. Alf notices Sonny behaving unusually, suggesting that keeping his activities hidden from the people around him may already be becoming more difficult.

Is Sonny putting his future with Dana at risk?

Dana has committed herself to marrying Sonny without knowing the full extent of what he is currently involved in. That makes his decision to continue helping Beau particularly dangerous for their relationship, because every secret transaction gives him more that he eventually may have to explain.

There is no suggestion that Dana currently knows what Sonny is doing, and Alf merely notices that his behaviour is unusual rather than discovering the truth. Even so, Sonny is now trying to maintain two very different parts of his life at precisely the moment when Dana believes they are closer than ever.

The engagement gives Dana and Sonny the romantic outcome they wanted, but Sonny’s actions ensure their happiness begins with a major secret already sitting between them. The question now is whether he can get himself out of Beau’s operation before Dana discovers what her future husband has been hiding.
