Home and Away’s Alf remains suspicious of Zane even after hearing the full truth about his prison past, putting him at odds with Marilyn.
Alf refuses to fully trust Zane in Home and Away even after hearing the truth about the crime that sent him to prison. While Marilyn quickly decides that Zane deserves another chance, Alf remains far more cautious and is not prepared to ignore what he has learned.
Determined to understand more about Zane, Alf invites him to dinner at Salt. Marilyn insists on joining them, clearly protective of Zane and uncomfortable with Alf pressing him too hard about his past.
Despite Marilyn trying to steer the conversation away from Zane’s criminal history, Alf continues asking questions. Zane eventually admits that he broke into a home as a teenager intending to rob it and, after being confronted by the owner, panicked and swung the bat he had taken with him.
The person he hit was the homeowner’s young daughter, who was badly injured. The confession leaves both Alf and Marilyn shaken, but their reactions afterwards are very different.
Marilyn decides that Zane has served his time and deserves the chance to move forward. Alf, however, remains deeply uncomfortable about how close she has become to him and is not ready to accept Zane as easily.
His concern appears to be driven largely by a desire to protect Marilyn. Alf quietly warns Leah to keep an eye on Zane, making it clear that learning the truth about his past has done little to reassure him.
Leah is already unsure about whether Zane should be offered work at the Diner, and Alf’s warning only adds to her doubts. She later asks David for his view, knowing he is familiar with Zane’s history, and receives another cautious response.
David accepts that Zane has served his sentence but still tells Leah to be careful. That leaves Marilyn increasingly isolated in her determination to give Zane the benefit of the doubt.
The tension follows Zane beyond the Diner when he later approaches Alf at the Surf Club. Mali notices Alf’s cagey reaction and immediately becomes curious about what has happened between them.
For Alf, the issue is not whether Zane has technically completed his punishment. It is whether he can genuinely be trusted around someone Alf cares deeply about.
Marilyn has already decided that Zane deserves a second chance, but Alf is clearly nowhere near the same conclusion. That difference in judgement looks set to create even more tension as Zane tries to find his place in Summer Bay.
