Home and Away Alf forced to choose between Martha and his distrust of Zane

Alf’s distrust of Zane threatens to affect his own marriage in Home and Away when he decides not to travel to Merimbula for Martha’s birthday. Despite Zane making steady progress in Summer Bay, Alf is still uncomfortable with the idea of leaving him alone in the house with Marilyn.

Marilyn is furious when she realises the real reason Alf intends to stay behind. She reports the situation to Leah and Justin, frustrated that Zane continues to face suspicion despite everything he has done to prove he is trying to rebuild his life.

Justin initially understands where Alf is coming from and admits he can relate to his instinct to be cautious. Leah, however, believes the situation has gone too far if Alf is prepared to miss his own wife’s birthday simply because he does not trust Zane.

The group decides they cannot allow that to happen. Leah, Justin and Marilyn ambush Alf at the Diner and make the case that Zane has given them no reason to believe Marilyn will be unsafe while Alf is away.

Justin even offers to keep an eye on things during the trip, but Marilyn immediately objects to the implication that she needs someone monitoring her. She makes clear that she is perfectly capable of looking after herself and does not need Alf organising protection behind her back.

Eventually, Alf agrees to go to Merimbula. He still adds one condition, warning that if he hears about any trouble while he is away, he will return immediately.

The decision shows that Alf has not completely abandoned his concerns about Zane. However, the people closest to him are increasingly challenging whether caution is still justified when Zane is repeatedly demonstrating that he wants to do the right thing.

For Zane, the situation is another reminder that rebuilding trust takes far longer than losing it. Alf may finally leave for Martha’s birthday, but his reluctance makes clear that Zane still has plenty to prove before the past stops following him around Summer Bay.
